Creating a stereo submix from Mackie mixer into Motu interface

Im prepared for your taunts. Im not a pro. I recently purchased a Mackie 1402 vlz to run a submix of drums into my MOTU 896. This is the first time Ive attempted submixing. I set up the mix on the Mackie and summed the main outs into channel one on my MOTU.

The problem: its mono. Cant get stereo. Cant pan the channels on my mixer and have it be panned in my final mix (drum overheads and room mics for instance).

So thats what I would like to be able to do. Pan in the submix and have it represent in the final mix from my interface.

I did some searches but havent really found this basic of a question yet. Ha.

Appreciate some basic instruction here. Thank you.

So....you're summing the Mackie into ONE input on the Motu (which I assume is a MONO input) and you want the end result to be stereo??

Sorry but am I missing something?

You need to go into two channels of the Motu. Left out from Mackie into 1. Right out of Mackie into 2...or something similar.

Yea, you need a left and right channel for a stereo signal and that is why you cannot get stereo.

For further FYI: 1 = Mono and 2 = Stereo. the only exception is when dealing with headphone outs.

tried those things also. Left and Right Main outs from the Mackie into Channels 1 and 2 on the MOTU respectively using XLRs with no adapters. Still, using the pan for a channel on the Mackie does nothing. I hear the signal in mono. When I plug in my headphones into the headphone jack on the Mackie...panning works fine in the phones. So conceptually Im just not understanding something here. Does that make sense? Any more tips?

Check the MOTU Cue Mix Console (the UI applet that controls the MOTU driver), assuming you're using the MOTU for input/cue monitoring. Sounds like you may need to set the pan controls in there.

The chorus is a little weak... I think it needs more lasers.

You'll probably have to pan channel one hard left and channel two hard right in the DAW if you want the panning to be noticeable; otherwise they're both going straight up the center. thumbsup

Tried it again and it worked. Must have done something wrong before. Mackie main outs to Channels 1 and 2 on the MOTU. Pan those hard left and right and there is a noticeable stereo image. Thanks everyone. Im a little less newb after today and I will use my powers for good not evil.
