Is there a store you can hear them first, or possible get a pair to try in your own place? What size room do you have? What speakers do you currently use, and what don't you like about those?

Sure... pick up the Yamaha MSP5... great monitors for the price... translate very well onto other setups...

Lots of people have recommended the finnish made Genelec 8020's (maybe you could even afford their slightly larger version (think it's called 8030 or something like that). The Genelecs are very heavy and rigid, too, since they're made in cast aluminium or something.

Hey saikit,

The only suggestion I'm going to make is this: whatever you choose, don't make the mistake of buying before listening to them.

Preferably listen to several sets in your room, using material that you're familiar with, but if that's not possible, then listen to them in a room similar to yours in size and dimensions. At the very least listen to them somewhere before buying them, otherwise you might end up regretting the purchase after a very short time.

All the best,

Spacey

I've tested. See if you can find a pair of Mackie 624s for that...They're about $850 new, but, they laid waste to everything up to my $1500 limit that I listened to...there are others that sound "nicer", but if you want to know what might be mix issues, the 624s have made me very happy.

I use the Alesis 720 DSP and have had good luck with them. They are cheaper than Mackie and if you can spare the extra dime you may want to look into the HR624. However for the price (about $299 each) they are great monitors with great sound and excellent build quality. Here's a review from Sound On Sound.

Hope this helps. The Event TR8XL's might be worth a look as well but in auditioning them I personally found the high end to be a little more edgy for my personal taste.

yo. i just upgraded to the dynaudio bm5a's from the behringer truth b2031a's. and the difference is night and day. i would have gone the bm6a route if i could have afforded it. but... the bm5a's were in my limit. and honestly, they are perfect for me. the low end is perhaps the only part that is a little lacking. but... at GC where i listened to them the had plenty of low end, so i think w/ a little appropriate treatment of my room (which currently has a) too many right angles and b) no treatment things will be much better/different.
