Check out my latest track. All music/mixing done by me. Vocals is not me, a guy I met a couple weeks ago
Really dig the song and the mix is solid. Just a personal preference, but I would like to see some more sub lows overall, it sounds like it was rolled off fairly aggressively.
I posted the original mix of this almost a year ago. I decided to remaster it yesterday. Enjoy.
Mic: Blue Baby Bottle
Monitors: KRK Rokit 6s
DAW: Ableton Live
Interface: Fireface 800
Room Treatment: Vocals and guitar recorded in a small room with lots of cheap foam. I remastered it in a room with no treatment whatsoever.
Guitar and Amp: 1967 Gibson SG Jr. through a Fender Blues Jr. NOS

Good tune, like the song and your voice. Mix sounds generally good, only suggestion is some of your guitar bends are a bit off, but certainly nothing horrible. Thanks for sharing.

Those bends are intentional. I'm glad you liked the song, though!
Hey All, looking for general feedback on this next 'metal milestone' in my audio engineering 'career.'
The big difference between this and the last song I posted here, is the snare sound, and the rhythm guitar sound.. and the fact that this has vocals.
That and I'm just CRAZY about this CAD e-100/Audix i5 blend, which has become my holy grail of snare and rhythm guitar sound. Its a late 90's CAD, with the rechargeable 9v batteries..
Shure Beta 52 - Inside kick, aimed at beater contact point, 3-4" away
Audix i5 - Snare top, aimed at the center of the head, 2 inches away
CAD e-100 - Snare shell, aimed between lugs 2" away from shell
EV PL 35 - Rack tom
Nady DM-70 - Floor tom
Nady TCM 1100 - Overhead L, spaced pair 2' in front of kit, waist high
Nady TCM 1100 - Overhead R
MXL 990 - Room mic, placed above the concrete floor just outside the room
Audix i5 - Rhythm guitars, 2" away from dustcap and cone edge, on axis
CAD e-100 - Rhythm guitars, 2" away from dustcap and cone edge, on axis
As far as mixing, I'm using Protools 9 and the plugins i'm really leaning on are:
Waves IR-L impulse reverb on my snare's aux send, Izotope Ozone's 'heavy midrange tape saturation' on my master bus in my mixing session, and then the Rennaissance compressor as part of my mastering session.
I am also using parallel compression on drums (using the Renaissance compressor on a stereo aux track). One amp/cab was used for both guitars - a VTM-120 into an avatar 4x12 with vintage 30s. Rhythm guitars are double tracked, panned hard left and right, lead guitar and bass are DI.. Drums are audience perspective..

Love the song-- would love to hear a higher quality version (other than SoundCloud!)

Thank you so much guys. I created the song along with the vocalist. We had a whole project set up with very good material, but unfortunately some personal issues prevented us from moving forward. We are currently discussing the future of the project.
Here is a new mix. The last one was clipping. Feel free to download it @ 320kbs.
First track I've ever recorded and mixed entirely on my own! Recorded on location at the band's rehearsal space. I'm aware of a lot of the obvious problems; a few things were beyond my control given the scope of my relationship with the band at the time (nonexistent) and time constraints. I'm still new to this, so I'll take any advice I can get.
Recorded with a Saffire Pro 40 into Logic 9, all processing done with Logic 9 plug-ins.
Protools 8.0.5 003+, Eleven Rack. Sennheiser e602, e604 on toms and snare bottom, sm57 on top. Samson C02 ohs (scum tier). e609 = A super overly compressed "kick snare" mic placed about a foot away near the height of the snare bottom head. Bass is DI into Waves GTR. Guitars are all plug ins, combination of Waves GTR, Guitar Rig 5 and Eleven. Vox are in a SM57 hand held.
The kick and snare have slight samples mixed in. They are custom made from various sources.
Plug in wise:
Liberal use of API 2500's. Oxford Dynamics, Waves C4 across GTR bus. Vocals are a smashed Avid Dyn3 with AiR distortion. Most of the reverbs are Trueverb.
Yeah, it's supposed to be this noisy!
Comments welcome, I'm not a fan of the overall guitar sound, sounds to spaced out. When I track my next ep, I'm reamping in a studio for sure.

Over-compressed all to hell.
barely listenable because of it.
Could be good but gridded and compressed to death makes it irritating and powerless.

I won't use pitch correcting software. I use "coaching" maybe you've heard of it. It keeps working even when you don't have it on.
