Sheesh. I'm an old analogue bitch, but I like what tape does and as long as I can locate new old stock, I'm going to utilise it. My equipment list:
Tascam 388 Studio 8
Audix F15 with Studio Projects VTM-1 pre on the Tacoma acoustic
BeyerDynamics M818 wired Lo-Z close miking a Fender Blues Jr. w/ BillM mods
'96 Japanese 50s Telecaster w/ Duncan mods
Wurlitzer WX-40 Synth
Musicmaster bass w/ flatwounds, DI'd into board
Roland TD-5 brain, MIDI triggered with the Wurli

Do you mean just under $1000 outboard for mixing? Not sure if this qualifies. I tracked this with focusrite saffire pro 40 for drums, everything else was API A2d, Apogee PSX100. All mixing was done ITB. I did use an API 2500 for the master though.

Wow, liked this. I hope it doesn't offend to say at certain parts it was a wee bit My Chemical Romance; in a good way. As such, maybe reference against some CLA mixes? I think his sort of kick sound would really work in there, and the guitars with a bit more body to them a la American Idiot.

Just my thoughts!
yeah i thought your song sounded pretty good other than the drums being kinda low, though I have to admit I was listening through crappy headphones at the time so that could have been misleading. Vocals sounded pretty good i thought- MAYBE add a touch more presence or air to them and cut some mud out to make them stand out a bit more. also, thanks for listening! i agree though, the guitars and mix needs more body...and goodness (lol) overall I think. I can do a lot better now, which is why its all being re-recorded...that and it was only a demo to begin with.

Just got an apogee ensemble for $1000 and finished my first mix down on this gear and am stoked on the quality compared to the digi 003 I upgraded from.

Feedback is definitely welcome as well as questions!

A simple song using a cheap ukelele, a shaker, and some of the percussion laying around my house that comes in those kid music packs.

Mics:
ADK TC-51 on the uke and vox
Studio Projects C4s on all percussion.

Thanks! I used an audix drum mic pack for most of the drums. D1, D2, D4, ADX 51's. Really like what I get out of that package for the price! Also used a 57, sm7b, and a bluebird. Oh and my home-made sub bass mic. Just did a lot of playing around with the different mics and placement. Crappy, crappy, CRAPPY room. No treatment at all. Man I can't wait till I move in to my new "professional" place lol!

They are great Tom mics! I didn't even eq those toms! They are literally untouched. Keep in mind that I used a suuuper nice drum kit though. Thats where the real magic is.Tama star classic babinga. And tuning is everything! Great mics though, definitely buy at least just the Tom mics. D2/D4.

sounds promising! not worried about the tuning. Our drummer is a stickler! I love his toms to death! thanks for the recommendation, I might get the whole pack as I could use a different pair of overheads as well. How are those in the pack?

To me they are pretty good. No jewel, but they work well. Its a bit tough for me to judge exactly how good though, because my room is so awful. I have some high end issues in there that I usually have to do extra work for. But I used em in that track for the overheads, so you can hear it for yourself!

Massively low end edit I did of this Sarah McLachlan track. Again done entirely on a laptop whilst on the train using only headphones. It turned out ok, the levels seems surprisingly good considering my headphones aren't great and I had a 3 year old child kicking my seat behind me, aggressively.

Hopefully the kid fell off his bike the next day.......

Just kidding, I love children really.

What's your reasoning for using only new old stock? I keep my 388 supplied with new LPR35: RMGI-North America LPR35 34511 Audio Tape 1/4" x 1800 ft LPR35 on 7" Plastic Reel | Full Compass

Plus, ya know, it helps keep the tape manufacturing wheels spinning, buying new does.

Hey man, sounding good!

It's probably a stylistic thing, but I'd maybe double track that guitar at the front to give it a bit more "thickness", sounds great once the other instruments comes in though, so just for the intro.

Love the bass sound and playing, sounds really good.

The backing vocals are a bit too "up front" for me, maybe double it, pan them hard and drop them back a bit?

Really good!

Another mix, with very similar gear as my previous here.

This time I used Skip Burrows advice on gain staging. I think the mix came out a lot cleaner than my other efforts - but I'd love your input.

I'm still mixing on headphones till I can convince the powers that be that monitors are in my future!

I'd love any advice and feedback I can get!

Don't forget to watch in HQ.

Thanks!

I'd very much appreciate any thoughts on this rehearsal room recording.

Bit of background:
Hobby band recorded completely live in our 15x12 foot practice room... heavily influenced by Sonic Youth (but vocals in German! - I'm a Brit currently living there) I'm the drummer.

Lots of spillage - esp tinny middly lofi cymbals on voc mic and whole band on OH's (sort of revenge, I guess!)

I notice the mp3 has some cymbal phasing which wasn't apparent on the WAV, suspect partly due to spillage (and consequent comb filtering phase effects as relative levels change due to differential compression) noted above and partly mp3 qualiity I used to make such a long track small enough to upload....

Generic Chinese copies of usual mics (SM 57s etc) bought as 2 low/mid-priced drumset mic sets

Bass gtr speaker mic'd with a bass drum mic. No DI's

Hercules 16/12 firewire interface recording 12 channels simultaneously

Cubase 5 with no outboard gear on a laptop (apart from half decent monitors - Adam A3X)

Probably far too much EQing and compression of various sorts in the attempt to glue the disparate sounds together.

We record all of every practice and I mix the songs that more or less worked (usually about 10 a week), as there are a lot of jammed sections, experimentation and happy accidents (and far more unhappy ones!) which we need to have for reference later. It's mixed quickly and dirtily, usually slotting the tracks into a previous mix that sounded ok and then tweaking it a little, mainly to let us hear how we sound rather than being intended for consumption by normal people. Sometimes they sound OK by mistake...

For those who don't want to plough through the whole thing, I think the most interesting bit is the breakdown and return to the verse which happens after around 5:30 (yes, the song is horribly long and needs some sections shortened)

Comments, criticism and questions welcome!

Kosmo, overall a pretty good recording. is that a live take? the guitars sit well. The kick needs EQ'ed some. sounds a lil whompy.

Here's one I'm working on. Almost done I think.

Gear:

Vox - AT4040 & Blue Baby Bottle
Guitars - SM57 & Blue Baby Bottle
Bass - DI
Drums - EZDrummer

All into an FMR RNP/RNC combo into an RME babyface and Nuendo 4

Yup, absolutely live. That's why it's full of mistakes!... and you're spot on with the bass drum - the original BD signal sounded like a wet fish being whacked against a cardboard box (too many blankets in the drum & bad mic placement). Definitely suboptimal, but did what I could with it.

Love the lead guitar and vocal on your recording (vocal maybe 10% too upfront, but sounding great).

Would maybe consider using drier/rounder/more bassy drum sounds - as the very full/real/solid sounds of the parts you have tracked yourself make the more ambient drum sounds seem a little thin/distant.

Please don't take this as a criticism, it's great! - just feel an even fuller/"phatter" drum track would bring out the strengths of the song and the guitar and vocal more.

I appreciate you thoughts, man! I get caught in between on the drums. It seems to be a matter of taste there. If i make em edgier and drier, It's suggested to tame them, and the other way, the same. I would like the cymbals to come out more though. I do love that lead tone though. I jusat wish i was a better lead player/

I figured your cut was live, just wanted to make sure

This is a mastered version of a song that I posted a few weeks ago. The song was mastered by Jamie King at Basement Recording Studio in Winston Salem NC. I recorded the song on my Digi 002r, lucid 88192 converters, and Art VLA pro II. The kick was a Audix d6, snare sm57, toms CAD m179, overheads oktava mk012 (oktavamod), hihat mic shure sm7b, room mics Cascade Vin-Jet, Oktava MK319. Guitars dual mic Cascade vin-jet, Shure sm7b, bass mic sm7b, vocal mic cascade vin-jet. Mixture of SCA preamps T15's, A12's, n72. Thanks
