Fun song! Sort of reminds of a They Might Be Giants tune.

[QUOTE=alexvdbroek;7570665]Here my latest effort

My wife's song to commemorate a friend who died in the Christchurch Earthquake which happened a year ago.

Comments welcome as always.
A.

Is that her singing?
That is well done.

I won't use pitch correcting software. I use "coaching" maybe you've heard of it. It keeps working even when you don't have it on.

LOVE this, Tim!

Very nice song and arrangement. Reminds me of Weezer in dynamics and approach but totally your own.

I would love to hear more of your stuff. Great great.

If there's one thing mix-wise, I'd try to take a bit of the fizz out of the chorus guitar part.

Yes it is. She certainly knows how to sing. We wrote it together - but she is the lyricist! (I can't write lyrics)

Reverb seems to only work for the snare at the moment. But really its the cymbals that kill me. I think they sound awful.

But Bass was DI through my sansamp bass driver. Then I added the Sansamp plugin on an aux track to get a bit more bite.

Guitars are SM57 & Senn. MD421 blended through a Peavey Classic 50 4x10 combo. I have a Chrysalis overdrive pedal for a little more grit. The tracks are doubled panned hard left and right.

Then I have some MIDI instruments in there as well.

All going through SCA N72 and C84 Preamps into a Black Lion Audio Modded 002. Not super low end, but not quite high end either.
Something that might help with the drums: Get FL Studio for recording the midi, and use EZDrummer for the samples. You can assign EZDrummer to it's own channel in FL Studio to make things easier (assigning the drum pads to the right "notes" is the hard part)...

Great performance, which is the most important.

Recorded in a small bedroom, not ideal but working with what we have.

Remember (for Murray) - Naomi Ferguson and Alex van den Broek - YouTube

I like her voice in my shoegazer music too - But a totally different production style!

Cool song, I was hoping it would pick up more but it's still a good one. I like everything on it.
I do think the lead could have had more glowing mids and a tad less top, possibly doubled since it is such a slow melodic lead.
But, that's just preference, good as is!
Keys are awesome of course!

What were you hoping would pick up more? The song? The guitar solo?

The song. I like it, but, I was hoping it would build more toward the end.

I don't have anything "lower" end, but I think as far as "low end" is concern it doesn't get any lower :P

Recorded some 20 years ago, 2 x generations tape cassettes: http://www.gearslutz.com/board/attac...pursuit70s.mp3

My brother played bass on it... before we started, I played him Good Vibrations. That's what I was going for... at least on the choruses.

here's my latest project, my wife and i did this. I'm reasonably sure the mix is terrible, my only mic is a shure sm58 .... and that's the least of my worries. My main question is how to, at the very end when there's like a million elements all going on, mix everything so it sounds "ok" ... the answer might be not to have a million elements but humour me.

sounds real good - guitars arent too bright and vox are nice.
the panning might get to be a bit much though

your panning is the first thing that catches me off guard. I think if you sort that out then you'd have a better overall mix.

Same gear as my last post: Digi003, ADK-TC51, SM57, Presonus Eureka, Nord Electro 73, various guitars, and a crappy bass. Friend of mine mixed this one for me in his home studio.

Here's a cover that I did about 2 years ago, and have been working on it since then. It was recorded and mixed all ITB with the guitars and bass being plugged straight into the computer. Drums were sequenced in FL Studio using EZDrummer, and I learned my lesson about using a wireless mic...
