Hey, i really like this song, it reminds me of Rafter in many ways.

It sounds really good, here's my $0.02

lead vocals are too centered - maybe too quiet but i think if you pan them to the left a bit that could make them sit better

middle freqs a bit muddy, hard to find everything in the mix. esp around the section that's happening at 2:45 -

maybe some of the reverb on the acoustic guitars is clouding things up a bit? Not sure how long the tails are but maybe you can shorten them or cut some of the freqs on them -

all in all though it's cool, interesting, and sounds great!

that 'steel guitar' thing is really cool.... i might steal that! thumbsup

Impressed with the bass sound you're able to get out of a headphone mix. I can never get the bass right with headphones. What cans are you using?

Lots of people think they are too bright but I like em'.

Thanks. I use the MDR-V700. Good for overall tonal balance but not for getting the bass in the sweet spot. Will have to try the 7506.

Here is a song I recorded a couple of years ago with a Firebox, AT2020, SM57, MXL991, AKG Perception, Circuit Bent SK1 to Sonar 4. I am doing the instruments and a friend is doing the vocals. I have since gotten upgraded mics, interface etc... but still like the sound of this pretty well. Mastered at a later date with isotope ozone 4... Feedback?

I'm not sure that you'd see a big difference, but I could be wrong.
Things like getting a good sound for the song type, sculpting out overlapping frequencies in other instruments, and getting the kick and bass to work together can help a lot.

Thanks Schnerg much appreciated. I heard the muddyness straight away when I played it over my Hifi earlier. I'm gonna address this issue when I remix it. Borrowing a pair of Focals so I should be able clean up. We're big on reverbs for this one, to get a washy dream like state vibe at the end but i do agree that the tails are blurring the spoken word dialogue.

Got a bit wacky with the panning as I did it over a pair of cans

Here is the first song I ever wrote and recorded and was done in the early 90’s.

- Cakewalk Pro Audio 4 (MIDI only)

I sequenced the song in Cakewalk then recorded the RAP-10 and D4 to the ADAT. All the instruments other than the drums came from the RAP-10. The vocal tracks were added. The tracks were then mixed down to a Sony MiniDisc recorder. I intended to write lyrics for the chorus, but I never got around to doing them.

Here is another song I recorded of a couple of my friends a short time later; I was just the engineer at this point.

We used mostly the same gear, but used an Alesis S4 instead of the Rap-10 and added a Roland GP-100 and an Alesis Midi Verb 4 to the process.

(There are a couple of digital clips in the mix from the initial mix down.)


Here was their band I recorded around the same time. I premixed the OH and toms to a stereo track, and put the Snare and Kick to their own tracks. Most of the mics we had for the drums were some cheap V-Tech, wantabe 57s. The vocal mic was the Shure Beta 87, Bass was Direct, and I cannot remember what kind of mic was used on the guitar.

too much gain on the guitar, it sounds very thin and weak

here's something i mixed for a friend. he did all the production and engineering using only two microphones. mixed in REAPER on some Bose headphones and crappy lo-fi speakers.

The guitars are really wide and the drums sound great. I like how you diss Fruity loops in the song lol.

The production in the intro is really cool, I love the delay on the guitars. The rapping is great, I love the lyrics (purple haze lol) the synth appregios are great, the vocal sound is good.

I played with the suggestions you had for my song, and it worked too in a different way.. ABCDEFG lol! This is a great song.. Heres the chorus again great!

I really like "Screams" a lot. Drums sound like a real person playing a drum kit in a room. The bass-heavy mix propels it along, and the effects-laden electric guitar solo is played with much feeling and emotion; classic 90's heavy rock. I dug the hell out of it, Fishmed.

Here it is. I recorded it with my band in my guitarists apartment.

ITB with Samplitude 11 and a presonus firebox for audio interface.

Focal Solo Be6 for monitoring.

Plugins used are Voxengo GlissEQ v2, Voxengo AF bundle, Waves API 2500, 550-A, URS 1980, CSR reverbs and Samplitude's EQ and Delay.

Esp LesPaul with Seymour Dyncan pickups and a Washburn guitar i thing but i don't remember the model. No more than 500$ though.

2 solid state guitar amps parallel each take, a Marshall and a Line 6.

The Mic's were i think a Beyerdynamic M400 Soundstar MK-II and a Sennheiser e845. The distortion is from the amps.
The amps are in the bathroom facing the bath tub. It was sounding huge...

Atlansia Stealth Bass guitar to a Sans Amp Bass Driver Deluxe D.I. with lots of overdrive.

Vocals recorded with the Sennhiser. No headphones. he was listening in hi volume from the monitors (i didn't have any headphones..). It was good though. The bleed was ok and it was adding to the mix. And he performed better than other times with headphones.

Drums are some "stolen" samples from a friend of mine that he recorded in his studio.
The cymbals though are from EZ Drummer.

And finally the Hammond and the Rhodes are from a Nord Stage directly on the presonus.

Heres a tip tho, Logic pro's autotune makes the macbook mic sound better...gives it a limiter effect. I HATE autotune haha, these are just demos I wrote the past 4 days or whatever.

When I really record them, I will have creamy thick warm vocals.

I cant stand autotune becauseI can actually sing.. Ha.

Here is another song I recorded of them. This was one I did before I got the ADAT. The mix was recorded straight off the mixer to two track (MiniDisc). I was able to get the singer isolated away from the drums and guitar. The bass was direct.

Am curious, a little off topic, but since you have an idea of the kind music I like to make and listen to etc. I was looking to get a nice set of speakers/monitors. I don't know anything about these things etc, but thought i'd treat myself to a nice pair. My Budget is around $500. Have heard good things about the Yamaha hs80M and the Adam A5's. Also hear good things about JBL LSR2325. I have a very small space (11X15 feet). Any suggestions etc advice on what speakers/monitors might work for me would be fantastic! (I like indie folk, ellito smith, Neutral Milk hotel etc)
