SP VTB-1 Pre-Amp vs. EH Mic Pre-Amp Vs. FMR Audio RNP

I own the Studio Projects VTB-1 pre-amp... and am interested in the Electro Harmonix Mic Pre-Amp and also the FMR Audio Real Nice Pre-amp. Anyone use the EH or FMR Audio pre-amps?

check out the joe meek mq3. it really shines in this price range <$300 if you want some tone, but a useable fidelity.

Well, the RNP and the 12ay7 are completely different preamps (not just in name, kimosabe). What character do you want? The RNP is supposedly very neutral, with an "extended" high-end - search around, you'll find audio samples. The 12ay7 is a tube preamp, so its sonic character will inherently be different.

I'm in the same boat as you, and I'm going to get either a Groove Tubes Brick or an Electro-Harmonix 12ay7 (probably both in time, actually ).

I've seriously heard things about the 12ay7 like "beats the UA 610, new classic preamp." And people laud plenty of praise on the RNP, but nowhere near the same level of hooplah. So, YMMV of course, but you just have to decide what character you want your preamp to impart on the stuff you record.

I use 4 EH preamps and love them. Here is what they are used for, when recording my 1 man band(drums, guitar, harp, vocals, all at once).

AKG 414 on vocals and harp in a rack

AKG 414 on fender deluxe reverb reissue

2 - Oktava MC-012 - one on the snare side of the kit, and 1 on the bass drum side.

You can hear alot of songs using this format at the link below. Remember though, I am doing this all live, and making up the words and music as I go along. There is no overdubing and very little eq'ing. I add some reverb, and take a bit of bass off the guitar. The vocal/harp and drum kit tracks, have no eq'ing. There is tons of bleeding on all the mics, because everything is within an arms lenght of each other. I am going to buy 3 more of these pre amps!
