Sound Proof a floor

I am about to add a drum-kit to my space and I want to spare the people below me.

As of now, I have a : Rug Pad / TKO interlocking 2x2 mats / and an area rug on top.

Any good tips or products for sound proofing a floor?

Unless it's an electronic kit, you don't have a chance. Sorry. Just get on good terms with your neighbors and work out a schedule with them?

Tried the electronic kit route, it was fun, but it sounded gay.

It's a commercial space so I build what ever I need.

it would be funny if you put your drum kit in a foam pit... that might help... lol

you need to decouple the drum space from the rest of the building. You could build a floating floor- a false floor resting on just a minimal number of points but a lot of the low frequency vibrations will still go through the walls and beams of the building.

For significant soundproofing you need room-within-a-room type construction, where as little of the 'inner' room touches any part of the outer room as possible.

You'd need to go the "build a floating room within a room" route. Very expensive, even if you do build yourself. Live drums are not only loud (duh!) but those low frequencies from the kick and toms are difficult to isolate.

I'd look into a modern electronic kit in conjuntion with BFD or DKFH. Very realistic, and would be a lot easier and cheaper than building something which may or may not be for naught (if you get evicted, cited for noise, whatever)

There is no such thing as sound proofing. All you can do is isolate the sound by reducing how much is transmitted outside of the space the sound originates in.

I like your avatar!

Unfortunately, there is no way around it. You have to build a room with in a room, with a floated floor. It's going to cost you thousands even if you do it yourself. The best link I can give you is to John Sayers forum. There is a lot of useful info on this there.

I may on occasion talk about some of the products I am a dealer for in my posts.. and that's OK! I sell them because I like them. Not vice versa. It's more fun to talk about things you know and love, then things you don't.

I hate electronic drums....But you said it sounded gay. Well what do you think the drums will sound like in that stupid booth. it's freakin drums.....They need air.

You will not get what you want..Big drum sounds and silents for the downstairs. What you should have thought about was renting a joint where you are on the ground floor. That would make sence.

Let me tell you something....My building is 18,000 sq ft. I have 3,000 of it for my studio. When the other area (with a small part of it over my live room. And I have 20' ceilings) was up for rent. I thought man I could rent a bunch of space out to bands to practice...and it would pay for my area. Well I had my drummer take a kick and snare(only) to the third floor. I told him over the phone to start playing.. I heard it through all the floors even in my lobby area. Idea was shot...So I made sure the people that moved in wasn't doing anything loud. ( I had some control over that).

It will be very hard for you to get it to where you want it. Because even if some how you get it to sort of work....I'm sure what ever you had to do..the drums will suffer in the recording. Like as in that booth....Drums will sound so boxy in that thing.

I hear ya. I don't like 'em either. It just sounded like you didn't have a choice until you said you're surrounded by other musicians. Screw 'em.

The easy way: 15x10 soft foam, maybe 5 or ten inches high and a platform (woodchip, whatever) on it with the drumset and you will have a bit less transmission of the low frequencies into the ground. But you will still hear the drums in the whole building. Angry neighbours will make bad tracks, as long as their beating you on the head won´t be with the groove.

I sort of feel guilty, like I'm an enabler for providing this link; as everyone has already pointed out, there are no easy solutions, and physics dictates that no matter how much money you throw at it your room will never be 100% "soundproof".

But having said that, you may find some interesting products & materials here:

http://www.kineticsnoise.com/

I've designed some rooms using their RIM Floating Floor System, and they're reasonably effective & quite practical.

yeah, is the sound actualy going thru the floor or down thru the walls?

you could crossline the floor with 4 layers of plasterboard and then finish it with flooring chip & thick carpet which would certainly 'reduce' energy going down thru the floor, but if really it's going down thru the walls and you have mebbe a weakpoint where the walls meet the floor also, then that's another story
