MX9000 vs SX4882

Greetings from the light:
Anyone have a Behringer SX4882 they would care to review? Apperently it's a redesigned MX9000 that changes the EQ from the original MX9000 style to the "british EQ" style of sweep. Also, the rack mount power supply is eliminated with a newly incorporated power supply unit built into the chassis of the SX4882. From all appearances the SX4882 is just a recolored knob and repainted version of the MX 9000 with the above changes, however they do taught the new Xenyx style preamp as having 130db dynamic range, but I can't find any spec to back this up? Basically what I'm after is solid evidence the SX4882 is an improvement in headroom and dynamic range. Comparative analysis can be difficult for those that haven't actually used both units.
I know this is a pretty new product, I cant find any reviews for it anywhere.
Anyone?

I've had noting but problems with the SX4882.

I bought one last year and it worked fine for about 4 months. Then smoke started coming out of the jack sockets. I contacted the supplier and after much hassle they replaced the unit.

I had the replacement for about three months when one of the busses developed a fault. Then about three months later smoke started coming out of the unit before the power cut out completely.

I know of two other people who have experienced similar problems with SX4882 internal power supply.

Has anyone else had a problem with this model?

Anyone else? I am looking to upgrade from my Tascam M-1600. I don't think I can live without an 8 Buss either. Been reading lots of great info on here about older boards $1500 and under.....

Maybe I nodded off and bumped my head but for some reason the SX4882 came to mind. It does have all the features I would like

BUT!

What does it sound like?!?!?! - not meaning other brands but are the pre's decent and the eq usable?

Regards,

Wayne

I once turned turned my SX4882 off and on again really quickly and it wouldn't come back on for about an hour. Presumed it had a protection circuit that kicked in. No problem. Then after about two months having it, the main breaker in my house tripped whilst I was using the desk. I reset the box but the desk didn't come back on. I changed the T15a fuse a few days later and it came back to life. Same thing happened a few days later. I presumed at this point the desk was making the breaker trip but then the breaker went 10 minutes later when I wasn't using the desk. Hmmmm?!?! It was fine for about two more months (till today in fact) then after about half an hour use on the mix channels, I carefully turned it off so I could unplug some outboards, and again it wouldn't turn back on. Changing the fuse had no effect . I was quite hot so I left it and after a couple of hours it worked again. (just now in fact!) Hmmmmmm.
I haven't been able to draw any concrete conclusions as the same conditions don't always cause the problem. Intermittent problems are the worst and hardest to diagnose. Sometimes it seems to overheat and won't switch on, but most of the time I can run it all day, turn it of and turn it back on five minutes later. It has been inconvenient a few times but it always comes back on So it's not worth the hassle of sending it back to Behringer, especially as I may have to wait four months to get a new one which may be the same. I may fashion some compute style fans into the sides behind the meter bridges to keep it cool as unlike the MX9000, it has none on the power supply. I would have kept the power supply external as on previous version of this desk. I recon this is causing the problem.
I had a MX9000 That I bought second hand. It had been service before I bought it. The track three flip switch went after about a week, buss eight went after about 4 years, the auxiliaries on ch 17-24 after 6, then the -17 +17 power a few months later. It must have been 10 years old. For a complex piece of Chinese engineering I bough second hand for £500 and used a lot, I was happy with its life and the use I had out of it. I looked into getting it repaired but no one would touch it. The circuit boards are framed on my wall.
I got the SX4882 without hesitation. I don't find the amps to be noisy, nor did I with the MX9000. The EQ is sooooo much better, very dramatic! It's nice to have all the lights. (I never had the optional meter bridge) The faders feel very flimsy, you can almost move them by blowing on them and having to plug the bits into the back is a pain in the bum.
The power issues concerns me a bit but I would still buy it knowing what I do now. It's still more reliable than the stupid computer programme I was using for a while. (It was just a phase).
I have quite a few Behringer bits and apart from these minor desk issues, they have always performed as the should. The main difference between it and the more expensive rivals I think it that Behringer stuff will smash to pieces if you drop it! To all the tech snobs who would pass it over and cuss cos it isn't expensive. YOU PROBABLY JUST AREN'T USING IT RIGHT.

Recording of my band I did on my MX9000 can be heard at www.myspace.com/lavingtonbound. (not the demos, they are quick things on the SX4882
