Firewire Question

Ok, just picked me up a Firewire interface and want to make sure I don't eff anything up..I am used to PCI powered cards.

Any rules for powering up/down?

I am assuming to power up before computer is on and down after computer is off.

Anything else I should know? Just trying to be on the safe side, thank you!

Firewire is even hot-pluggable you will cause no damage.
BUT your device might not be recognized if you switch it on after booting the pc...
Just try it.

Read the manual, they might suggest powering up before or after.

m-audio tells you to only connect/disconnect devices with the computer power off. my guess is that they cheaped out on protection circuitry and that some people have fried their devices by hot-plugging.

I wish I could remember some details or what mag it was, but just recently in some recording mag, maybe Sound On Sound or Future Music or something, there was a piece on the subject. Anyone else read it and know what mag it was? Anyway, I remember it did say that some devices were better/safer than others as far as hot-swapping and such was concerned (only thing I remember was Edirol's being called good in this respect). I'll have a look and see if I still have it somewhere.

Peece,
