I have the Profire 2626. It has excellent Octane preamps that match pretty much any dedicated 2-channel preamp below $700-800 (and you get *EIGHT* of them! Handy when you want to record something more complex than a single vocalist or solo guitar...) I also have the Fast Track Ultra 8R. Same nice preamps, basically same interface but USB 2.0 instead of FW. Sound quality is about the same. Go with the FTU8R, you can have the best of both worlds with only $400. Firewire is really no longer necessary.

PaPi's idea is certainly viable. What $800 interface are you looking at?

MOTU interfaces aren't exactly famous for their preamps. If you want something substantially better than the afore-mentioned M-Audio products, I'm afraid you'll have to spring for something like an RME Fireface 400/800, depending on how many channels you need.

Again I agree with PaPi. I actually bought a MOTU Traveler Mk3 a couple month back, didn't like the preamps at all, sold it.

I would totally recommend the M-Audio Profire line and the Focusrite Saffire line. I have the Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40 myself. The Fast Track Ultra 8R is a great option too.

For now, 1.

I've a vocals studio.

But soon, I'll have my M-Audio Fast Track Pro ( give by my school )

It'll be right for a few moments ...

But if I want to have some new stock

I was thinking of the profire 610 and the pre-73 very serioulsy ...

If you only need 1 channel, then the profire 610 alone will do. It also has Octane preamps, albeit only two. You won't need a dedicated preamp, unless you want a substantial jump in quality, that unfortunately comes at a price (think well over $1,000.)

If you only need one or two preamps, there really is no reason to get the 2626. In fact, I'd suggest that you get the 610 first without the GAP Pre73, to see if you like the stock preamp. If not then get the GAP Pre73.

I cannot comment on owning high end preamps. However, I have noticed my own recordings often sound in the same relm as many "low end" professional studios I have been to. By "low end" I mean less than 100k in equipment, usually an HD system with some $1000-2000 preamps and a great mic. I am not saying it sounds as good but for just a comparable vocal chain, it would cost about $4000 when all is said and done. Some sounds about the same, some sound better, it often has to do with time and someone setting a generic compressor setting without even listening to the vocalist as well as just going to the most expensive mics. This is going through the preamps on my soundcraft mixer to my old Delta 1010lt.

I just got a Profire 2626 to upgrade from Delta 1010LT, not expecting to use the preamps. They are actually noticeably better than my soundcraft MFX 20/20, not that it is a high end board but I didn't expect much. I would imagine that even a $1000 pre wouldn't awe me, not that it wouldn't be a step in a positive direction.

Your better off getting the $800 sound card and then getting a pre-amp down the road. Always try to get the very best, as you'll be using them for a long time. They become part of your family...

yes, of course.

I have my Neumann tlm 102 and I will use it, probably for 30 years !

My monitors are my second dad when I mix, they tell me what to do and I do lol.

But I've a e-mu 0202 usb ( scrap ) and a presonus bluetube DP with a new tube

Soon, I'll receive my m-audio fast track pro ( my school give me one )

But I want a better sound card, this is why I expected for a m-audio profire 610.

Thanks for all the comments guys !
