The best way to record a group of vocals depends. Does it sound right for the track when all singers are being recorded at the same time? If so then record it as a group. Does one of the singers suck? If so then record them separately so you can turn them down in the mix (or off). Does it sound better to record each separate and have control in the mix for each? If so then separate it is. The only way to know is to hear it within context of the mix. For instance your room may not sound real pleasant having to back a mic off enough to pick up a group of singers, so mic'ing each up close and blending might work. Or vice versa. For $200 there are some choices but just buying on eBay used may or may not be a good idea. If anything go to your local dealer and listen to the mics and pick a good all purpose one. It's hard buying mics over the internet without a return policy. A few decent ones to look at (if they're in good shape) are the AT3035, CAD M179, ADK Vienna or Hamburg, and the new Joemeek JM37DP which is way under budget new so if you can find it used on eBay might be a steal. all at once, maybe 2 mics tops. unless you want some polished pop sound. then one at a time, all auto-tuned.. but 1 omni mic is the way i would go. everyone around it. mic selection is all a matter of preference i think. LDC's are overated imo. panda |

imo, it also depends alot on how big your "group" is. if its 4 people. probably doesnt matter to much. individual or all at once. but once you get into 8, 10 or more people. its like a loud amp. its just the amount of air being pushed. then all the people who are slightly off. you can record 20 people solo and mix them. but its just not going to sounds the same as 20 people singing at once. everyone at once is just gonna hit your brain [and everyone else's] right. solo's and mix just will never sound right. some may say "artificial". just make sure to put the worse singers in the back. panda |
