Overhead Options.

What are the best options for a mic that reproduces good, clear cymbal sounds and overall overhead sound?

At the moment I have a pair of Samson CO2's ($119 pair)
and a pair of shockmounted M-audio Nova's ($100 each)

I know these are far from great mics. They sound good for the $100 mark, but I'm looking for Overheads that run $250 or less and are designed and best suited as overheads for great cymbal reproduction.

It's probably your room and not your mics.

Having said that, I got good results the other day with my MXL 603s. Octava o12s are also very common. Earthworks makes incredibly accurate mics for drum overheads as well.

Accurate? Earthworks. Period.

No so accurate but good sounding: Neumann KM84i, KM184s, DPA 4011, Sennheiser MKH40s; AEA R84s in blumlein or R88, COles 4038 pair in Blumlein; Schoeps CMC6/ MK4.

Now, how to find something under $200? Sennheiser e914 and e614 are in this price range. I know AKG's C1000 gets raves from people who like it (sadly, I'm not one of them). Saver your $$, AND sell your old mics and buy the best you can afford with the combination.

i'll put in 2cents here....
the nady rms-2 was really nice on overheads....
but
its gonna really reflect your room....figure 8 you dig...
if you're in a rough room that will not help you and you'll want a cardioid mic...
my ceilings are tall enough that i can sort of get away with a figure 8 on overhead....

i like the AT pro37r right now....it's trashy but nice...$75 to $85 used...

old akg 451? ---> i use a akg blueline overhead sometimes...hyper capsule...

what about those oktava 319?
012 pair? haven't used them but i'm going to try and borrow a pair from a friend....

i'm really getting interested in oktavas right now.....
they're just so damn ugly....

Thanks for all the replies, i now have an arsenal of what to look for.

I work at an online music store so I may be able to stretch the price range a little bit ( by saving more and the discount). However stretching 250 to over $600 seems unlikely.

Also, My room is, you guessed it.

FAAAAAR from great. However with my overheads the rest of my kit sounds pretty good, just the cymbals.

I have acoustical foam in my room to control it.

I know that mic placement is half of the battle (maybe this is my problem) What is a figure 8 pattern? what are some good ideas to try and how can I figure out things such as the null points of my mics, and which angle is best to aim in which direction. ( I know trial and error has helped me get the actual DRUMS sounding very well, the cymbals, as I've stated is another story.)

Please help with advice or links to advice...

figure 8?
well it sorta looks like this

8

bi directional....so the back and the front of the capsule/ribbon pick up the same amount of signal..
so if you've got a troubled room.....its gonna pick that up...
