FMR PBC-6A - any suggested starting settings for "dirty" rock bass and/or male vox

I know "presets" are usually poo-poo'd a bit, but I am pretty new to using comps that aren't the built in Digi or Logic plug comps. This is my first outboard comp actually.

I fully intend on "using my ears" to figure things out and I already heard amazing results compared to my softcomps when running it on my voice with all knobs straight up even. Just a little bit of the knee rolled back to the "soft" side worked great.

However, I am kinda shooting in the dark a bit as I don't fully understand how these controls map to traditional comp (digirack, for example) controls. I guess there is no wrong way, but any suggested "starting" settings would be greatly appreciated. I am def not looking for transparent or clean, and not too much pumping either.

Thanks in advance!

quickish attack, little longer release so that it "holds" the signal in place = sustain

use the drive knob to get some grit and the thick button in to add some subtle but noticeable color..

should get you in the ball park anyway -

PS - harden that knee control a bit too

Hard knee, fast attack and fast release will get some grit. Push it harder than you would with a plug-in.

Adjusting side chain filter via special mode gives you some of the nice control over lower end too! I find it so useful..

My PBC just landed (small aren't they..), and I wondered what I need to insert into the sidechain jack, or is it an internal set sidechain filter frequency..

I'm hoping to use it tracking vocals after Pacifica, and would appreciate any tips on settings for vocal tracking use. I have been mainly using a Coles 4038 on my vocals

cheers

There is a HPF built in. You access it by holding down the Thick & Bypass buttons together which puts you in "Special" mode. It's all described in the manual.

I prefer a softer knee on vocals but I suppose that a hard knee is a bit "dirtier".

My manual on paper and here: http://www.fmraudio.com/images/PBC%20Startup.pdf don't mention much about HPF. Is it the Sidechain mode?

I'm currently testing one and didn't find big difference when going throughout the freq's. More tests tomorrow. Make vocals sit in the mix but I'm missing some "in the face" effect.
