Hissy noise on Macbook Pro + Presonus Mobile!!

Hey all,

I'm a long time lurker here at Gearslutz and I followed the Firestudio Mobile thread which persuaded me to buy the device!
Now everything is all good except, there's a really annoying hiss!
I'm a real beginner at this stuff - traditionally a keyboardist, I'm switching to a Logic/Mainstage based system.
However, now there's this really annoying high pitched hiss that I hear whenever I use the system!
I'm using a 2008 Macbook Pro (the one right before the unibody design) with the Presonus Firestudio Mobile interface. Now, when I unplug the power from the macbook, the hiss gets alot less audible (it's still there, just at a lower pitch and volume). So I'm guessing it has something to do with the mac's power supply? Which is really weird since I thought the whole reason for getting an external interface is to get it as far away from the computer's noisy environment as possible?? So why is it still affected??
BLAH!

As I mentioned earlier, I am a beginner and don't have a clue on when to even begin to solve this problem! I tried using the AC adapter on the presonus, instead of just using bus power - didn't work.

Anyone have any idea on what to do?

Thank you guys heaps in advance and I look forward to spending some time around here as I start to dive into the more high-tech side of music!!

Phil

Your Macbook's power isn't "clean" because of the electronics inside. The hight pitched stuff when it runs on battery is actually the processor switching clock speeds. It does that quite often (few hundred times per second) to save power and run cool, you can actually hear it if you press your ear against it. It's more pronounced when the computer is idling. Move windows around and it quiets down. Most electronic devices have that to some degree, calculators, flash based iPods, cell phones, etc. Actually, running photobooth and just hiding it makes it stop because the CPU is kept from switching speeds for some reason.

This electro-magnetic disturbance is passed along through the Firewire cable. and also through the power lines in the house. You can improve it a lot by just using a different power outlet for the computer than you do for the audio interface. 6-pin firewire cables (the larger ones found on audio interfaces) all transmit power, the 4-pin versions (used for DV cameras) don't. So you can eliminate the "dirty" power through firewire cable by using a 6-pin to 4-pin cable and an adapter to get it to 6-pin again, eliminating the power transmission through the firewire cable.

The noise you hear when the Mac's power brick is connected is the power controller checking the power status and/or charging the battery in short bursts.

ok thanks for the reply!!

So does that mean there's no way to fix it if I want to keep it bus powered??
HOW ANNOYING?!

I hope it doesnt show up too much when I use it live...I was counting on the buspowered feature so I dont have to carry too many things out there...

Ill keep you guys posted if the firewire cable trick works..(although, is it possible that it's an unrelated problem? because when I ran photobooth and moved windows around, and it's still there! it only stops when i remove the power cable...)
