Is OCD an engineer thing? or just me?

Maybe its me, but everything in my studio has to be organised... when im not using my desk, all the faders have to be down and the knobs set to zero, all excess cables need to be tied up... the rolling racks need to be perfectly alined with my desk at 90 degrees :P and it annoys the hell out of me that some of my bass traps are slightly squint

anyone else got this problem? :P

No, you are fine; there is nothing wrong with an orderly studio. It will benefit you when having potential clients visit your studio. Showing how much effort you put in your studio will hopefully communicate to these people that you will put the same level of detail into their project.

It is an issue in the studio when you start making your clients obey unreasonable rules in the studio that stem from OCD.

Consider yourself lucky! Not all types of OCD result in actually useful activity........and my speculation is a rather large percentage of engineers have one form or another.....

well, thats positive i suppose
to be honest, it wouldn't actually bother me if my studio was tidy. i spend so much time making sure my desk is simmetrical that i never get round to cleaning up lol. its always a long night getting it tidied before a band arrives the next day...

I'm with you bro, I rock harder with symmetry.

And yes, I have a thing of Clorox wipes that gets used regularly.

ahhh .. now that is familiar ... my 'work in process' is just fine.. but I don't like 'visitor' unless things are tidied up.. more to keep the curiosity contained and gear safe than an enlarged neetness bone.

I like a tidy workstation. 90 degree angles and symmetry plague my studio. But it still manages to look shabby to me. Ah well.

90 degree angles are theoretically bad acoustically... Odd angles are theoretically better, with a symmetry along the left-right axis. The problem with symmetry is you need everything in even numbers. 2 screens, check. 2 monitors, check. 16 channels on the left mixer wing, 16 channels on the right mixer wing, check.

Some people like to sort their books by color, I imagine one could do the same with outboard gear. The horror!

I am I the only person who orders his cables by resistor color code? I mean, they make these snakes set up for it basically. It would really bother me not to use the proper order.
