Most stable XP version?

Hi guys,

Is there any consensus on the most stable version of XP on which to run the i88x / mLan drivers? I'm about to reinstall my OS, and thought I should go with the best service pack from the get-go.

I've had a look through GS and 01 x-ray (although mostly search-engine guided...). I didn't get too far (except for the fact that early sp 2 was bad news due to firewire restriction).

Any thoughts or experience would be appreciated!

I've had great success with XP SP3.

Use the latest revision of the mLAN drivers.

Keep the .NET framework to the latest version of 3.5; don't update to the 4.0 version as some users have had problems with stability.

Look at the mLAN Central forum for info on Microsoft hotfix's for getting the Firewire bus back to S400 after the SP3 update.

Other than the usual mLAN stuff (turning off SpeedStep, turning on background services, etc.) I don't know of any other recommendations.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the reply! I have a valid XP key, so I'm not gonna pay to go to 7. It's good to know that the i88x works there, as well, though!

I'll do what you suggested...now, I just have to figure out what a .NET framework is, haha. Google to the rescue...

Thanks again,

Tom

Figured I'd toss in some input on this. Had an i88x laying around for a few years and decided to record stuff again. I have it running with with an old Sony all in one desktop PC I had laying around. 2.0 GHz C2D, with 4 gb mem. Windows 7 basic 32 bit. Have the OS stipped down to it's bare minimum. At first I was having issues with the i88x dropping out. No crackling but full on dropping out for a few seconds. After some troubleshooting, I figured out it was the wireless causing resource spikes. Disable the wirelesss in device manager (on off switch isn't enough), and the drop outs are gone. The I still had some crackling. Set the asio buffer from the lowest 64 samples to 128 samples in Ableton, and the thing works flawless with the latest Ableton Live so far.
I tried that PAE patch that allows you to use more than 4gb memory in 32 bit 7, but my video drivers glitch.
