Beyerdynamic m201tg

I finally borrowed a beyer m201tg and A/B with a sm57 on snare... Both great but the punch and full sound of the 201 has won me over! I also taped a newer 451 to them... I had all three taped together with the capsules aligned... I hope to get the whole kit over here so i can see how it fits in the mix... the 201 and 451 combo sounds huge on my black beauty snare! Has anyone else witnessed how awesome this mic is? What else do you like it on besides the snare?

Guitar cabs. Pretty much anything you would have used an SM-57 on.

I find the 201 has a fuller body and a smoother top than a 57 for snare drum. It's not as boxy sounding as a 57. I use it when shooting for a warmer/solid snare sound and an Audix i5 for a more aggressive sound.
I've used the 201 in combination with an AEA R84 for acoustic guitar as well.
Nice, well built mic for the money. I believe Beyer is discontinuing it though.

At least they are reasonably plentiful on the used market. E-Bay always seems to have several up at any one time. A version of the same mic appears to have been produced under the Revox brand as well. I've got 2 M201s and one of the Revox mics, all picked up for @$100-125 each on E-bay. The M101 is also nice if you want omni.

I have an M101. I'd love another one but, sadly, they're not quite so plentiful :(

I ordered my 201 through Sweetwater (here in the States).
A sales rep informed me of it's eventual demise when I ordered it. I'm not clear on whether Beyer still offers it but I know it was taken off of Sweetwater's product listing.

sorry...I threw in my two cents without completely reading the thread. If you get a chance check these mics (AT4051) out for your app. You may be interested.

Yes, they are nice, as are the AT-4053a (hypercardioid) and the AT-4049a (omni), but a bunch more money. They typically go for @$250 used while the M201 is about $125 used. I have them as well and use them for acoustic instruments and overheads. I'd be more inclined to use the M201 on snare and guitar cabs thogh. They are all great and very useful mics. I say buy all of them, this is gearslutz isn't it?

Well, I emailed Beyerdynamic about the M201 yesterday; and this is the reply I got

Quote:
Dear Mr. Williams,

Thank you for your message. It´s a pleasure to learn that you are so enthusiastic about
our M 201 microphone. However, I can ease your mind: It is not intended to stop
production of our M 201 TG microphone as there is still a reasonable demand for
this mic.

My favorite combo to date is 4051 + M201!
