Looking for stand-alone AD converter w/ADAT lightpipe

I'm looking for an 8 channel stand alone AD converter with ADAT lightpipe I/O. Must be able to be either slave or master clock - either way, with my set up it must have both lightpipe In as well as Out.

So far I've found the Adcon Marian which I know nothing about and don't know where to buy. The Aphex 142 only has ADAT out, not In so I think that one is out.

Presonus Digimax, M Audio Octane, Focusrite Octopre, et al all have mic pres which I don't think I really want.

Any suggestions in the $500 ballpark?

I've looked around a bit, and if you're looking for without pres, there's not much of a mid range that I've seen, for some reason. Sm Pro Audio has a few pieces you can check out:
SM Pro Audio: AD/DA Converters

Other than that, seems like everything with 8 channels either has pres or is like $2K and up for Lynx and Apogee and RME and the like. If you find something else in the middle, I'd be curious.

Digimax has ADAT in to analog out, but you're stuck with the pres on ADAT out. Not sure if there's any cheap ADAT to analog out boxes.

some of the above suggestions are preamp/converter combos. I'm looking for just conversion with adat I/O.

There is not much out there moderately priced. But I have found the Frontier Tango 24 - discontinued but still out there on the used market.

The Alesis AI-3 is decent and well within your budget. I think it may have been discontinued, but it shouldn't be hard to get a hold of a used one (around here, they pop up quite often).

The Aphex 142 has Adat in.. I think it's the 141 that doesn't.

I've used the Presonus Digimax FS for this kind of thing. Just because it has preamps, doesn't mean you have to use them. You can use the insert points as A/D inputs, and it has D/A outputs, so you can bypass the preamps entirely. The clock is pretty good too.

Duh, why didn't I think of that.

The only slight issue with this is that the inserts are unbalanced, otherwise it's exactly what you'd want.

The FS is looking promising. Can it be clocked Externally thru the ADAT IN?
The Berry ADA8000 would be cool if the preamps could be bypassed but evidently, according to everything I've read, the line ins are still tied to the preamps.

thanks

Yes, the Digimax FS can act as master clock, and it can send and receive clock via ADAT or BNC wordclock. It also has swtichable 75 ohm wordclock termination if needed. According to the Presonus literature, even if the Digimax FS is not acting as the master clock, all devices in the chain will share its very low jitter spec.

you can look for ....

What illnus suggested a used Alesis AI-3 on ebay ($100-200)

Black Lion mods these units too!

Black Lion Audio | Alesis AI3

if you can grab 1 for a round $100 with the signature mod ($420) still close to your $500 budget

Hope this helps....
