Simple NT1 Mod

Howdy folks,
Was looking around here, and Michael Joly's web site and thought I'd try a little mod to my trusty NT-1: Mr. Joly point's out on his site how closed off the head basket is on the regular NT-1. (His mod is great, btw - completely new head basket, and the brilliant MJE-K47 capsule).
That said, if anyone wanted to try this, this is an easy way to open up the head basket of the NT1. The resultant sound is a little more open and detailed, and to me sounds more "real" and believable (sorry for the vague description - haven't had chance to test it fully). the good news is that it only takes two minutes, and doesn't cost a penny; we're simply going to take out the inner of the two meshes, to let to air reach the capsule. So, here we go...
First, here's the tools you'll need:
Simple NT1 Mod-1.jpg
A pen, some pliers, a philips screw driver, some long, poke-y devices (the blunt dart worked great), and a bottle of Newcastle B.
Right, grab your NT-1:

Use the philips to open it up:

And you get two parts, the meat of the mic:

And the enclosure:

Take one of your poke-y devices, and start poking the inner mesh (that's the finer of the two), into the body of the enclosure. Don't be afraid of bending the outer mesh wires - they bend back pretty quick!

After some serious poking, you should see the inner-mesh starting to come away from the outer. Look inside and your should see something like this:

Stick your pliers into the enclosure (needle nose obviously are a good choice!). Grab some of the exposed mesh and start twisting. It may take some controlled force, so take your time. Eventually it should all come out (try and get it in one piece, and then fish out any left-overs):

Almost done; just put the mic back together:

And savor the cool look of an exposed capsule, and the knowledge you have a pretty unique mic, while polishing off your Newcastle B:

Right, I hope this is useful/interesting to someone - once more, I must say, if you really want your NT-1 to sound good, send it to Michael Joly. But if you're bored in the commercials of South Park, give this a try! Enjoy folks!

I will have to get a bottle of Newcastle and try that mod.

Or maybe a bottle of "Home Brew"
