cad m179 into mbox making noise

I'm using a cad m179 into into an mbox which is making a lot of noise. Just wondering if it could be a phantom power issue of the mbox that is causing the m179 to make so much noise?

When i hold the mic in my hand the amount of noise decreases significantly, but when its back in its holder the noise cranks right back up.

Any suggestions?

You mean low frequency (50 or 60 Hz) hum right? There might be something up with your mic cable's ground connection. Or you have lots of electromagnetic activity in your location. The M179 doesn't have an overdone basket as most mics have so some radiation might get through to the capsule.

If this is a laptop set-up, try unplugging the computer from the supply and running it on batteries.

just so ya know OP, I had the same setup for some songwriting I was doing at home a couple of years ago. on a desktop pc though. anyway, zero noise here. and I use m179s in my studio work all the time. so I think the above posts are probably right - wiring or similar grounding issue.

touching it reduces noise tends to mean that you're acting as a ground when you touch it, which means wiring issues somewhere.

where exactly is the question.

never experienced that with a laptop myself.

swap the mic, swap the cable, unplug laptop, etc until you find what's causing, then figure out why.
Basic signal flow.
