Thread Starter | looking at at3035 and mxl v67g...
Hi Been using an Shure SM7B into a Great River ME1-NV for a while, like the sound there! (Thanks GS!) I've been itching for a condensor mic, and saw both an Audio technica AT3035, and a MXL v67g on sale used at the local guitar store for 75$ each I track my vocals (male) sometime female, guitar amp, and will now be doing acoustic guitar...and recommendations as to either of these? Much thanks! |

I've used the sm7 and at3035 extensively but not the mxl. I used the 3035 for vocals and acoustic guitar and although it sounded ok, everything sounded broing and sterile. Through a Great River you might have better results than me, of course, but I didn't like it at all. Morgan |

I love the AT3035, I own 3 of them. What is "boring and sterile" to morgan is "true" to me...I like that it doesn't hype anything. It takes high SPL very well, has very low self noise. I use them for: vocals (both genders), electric guitar, drum overheads, grand piano, upright bass, violin, horns, nylon string guitar (it's OK on steel string, but I like other mics better for this). $75 is a great price. One argument for snagging it is that they're out of production and will sooner or later be impossible to find, except used. I wouldn't be surprised to see them appreciate in value over the next few years....... have no experience with the MXL. Oops, just noticed that the mics are used...I'd still buy it. |

rty5150 is right, you should grab both at that price! I have both. I disagree with most that say the 3035 is unhyped and neutral. I think it has a chirpy upper midrange that can be too much on a bright source. (like my voice AND my acoustic gtr... ) I *GREATLY* prefer the V67g on both vocal and acoustic.(and not just my voice and gtr) Great acoustic guitar mic, no doubt about it. Just sounds flatter, richer, more detailed to me than the 3035. But the 3035 is a great mic too. Pretty much always ends up on kick drum for me, it just excels in that application every time I try it there. Again, I think it's because it has a slightly exaggerated low end. So good on kick. 3035 sounds "drier", a tad more focused. V67g sounds "bigger", but is also more balanced sounding to me. Get both, you won't regret it! Two of the best cheap condensers right there... |

if those don't cut it, i got plenty more mics to choose from. mk319, and apex 460 fill other voids, too. | |

I've used the AT3035 with good results on acoustic guitar, vocals, violin, viola, hand percussion and drums (mono OH/Kick/Tom). It excels at acoustic and string instruments. Proximity effect can be a little heavy for vocals while you're getting used to it in my opinion. Also I wouldn't say this is a "bright mic", I use it with an ATM450 all the time on acoustic guitars and strings and the 3035 is definitely the darker/warmer mic, can get muddy with a high SPL directly into it. Overall I think it's a very natural sounding mic that has a little bit of its own flavor. Definitely pick it up. -Danny |

Thanks for all the great advice!, I got the AT3035 -- figuring I could pick up a V67 later for slightly more cash. Well, I ran that mic through my ME1-NV and my RNC and it sounds real good on vocals, happy there for sure. I'll try it on acoustic later. Thanks again! |

Personally I think you probably should've just gotten both I would pay $150 for an AT3035 on it's own.
