Thread Starter | What kind of cables? Yes, seriously
I have the world's worst quarter inch and mic cables currently. I'm going to replace them and I might as well get something decent. While I know cables are pretty similar, are there any recommended good value for the money brands out there? Nothing crazy high end or anything, and I'd be happy to buy from a reputable slutz cable maker if there are any. At this point I probably need one good mic cable and one good quarter inch. |

I have Redco make all of my XLR's out of Mogami 2549. I recently picked up a bunch of guitar cables. I assume that's what you mean by "quarter inch". My favorites were the Armor Gold and the Vox Professional. The jacket on the Armor Gold is a little weird at first, but it helps to avoid tangles. The Vox is a good cloth covered cable. They're very clear sounding cables with good highs, and neither has any handling noise. The connectors on both are good. Both are fairly inexpensive, although not the cheapest. I have a pretty good pile of cables, from cheapo Belden up to some that are fairly expensive. At this point I don't see any point in paying more than the $35-40 you would for the Armor Gold or Vox. None of my more expensive cables perform any better.

Steer clear of Monster - Redco / Mogami / Planet Waves / George L are all good cables.

| No monster
but mogami is great ! planet waves is good also. Reddco probably the most cost effective unless you got the patience to make your own. Monsters I have not liked so much

Almost all my cables are Canare L-2T2S or 4E6S. I like Mogami too, but when I started wiring my studio I went with Canare cable and Neutrik connectors. I've stuck with it ever since. You can't go wrong with either one though. If you're feeling crafty, whip out a soldering station and make the cables yourself. Most big music stores sell individual Neutrik connectors and bulk cable by the foot. Soldering cables is strangely relaxing! Maybe it's the fumes... |

Make your own cables. So much cheaper! You can make the high end stuff for the price of the mid level stuff if you have a soldering iron, a good wire stripper and 10 minutes. |

I just got a cheap spool of Canare star quad and ordered a bunch of neutrik connectors($2 ea. at parts-express.com). It's fun work to make cables as well as you can customize to exactly your needs. Furthermore if any cables ever break or start displaying bad signs you have the tools to fix any problems. The one thing I will say is that from a low-end perspective, I dont think that brand of cable is especially important. All of the listed brands are pretty good but just use proper judgment and see if the cable is decent for the price. | |

Canare Star Quad for instruments every time Mogami for internal cabling and Belden for Looms. I've heard annoying microphonics from Mogami looms sometimes but it's more felxible for internal work. |

| +1 here. I only uses Canare and Neutrik. Mogami and others are good (Not Monster. Ever) but this is a cheaper way to get the best quality cables available.

I would also recommend Redco and see if they have something from Gotham for the cable. Great quality stuff at very reasonable prices.

Honestly anything that has good shielding and a relatively thicker gauge wire will do. Don't buy Monster cables if you can help it. Incredibly over priced. Neutrik ends are the way to go.

I have not yet tried any monoprice cables, but do play to get a few to try soon. MOGAMI.....yes another fan, they're expensive but worth it if you want professional results. Your signal is only as good as its weakest point, why spend ridiculous amounts of your hard earned $$$ on mics and pre's and connect them with trash?????? just my thoughts. |

Another vote for build your own mogami/neutrik with parts from Redco. Great prices and crazy fast shipping. I ordered stuff Thursday night (priority mail) and it came Monday morning. |
