upgrade from tlm103 mic

Hallo

(sorry my bad english)

we are now ready to upgrade our vocal mic, wich is a Neumann TLM103.

We make electro-pop-rockpop music, and have a female singer.
The only preamp we have now is the one in our RME fireface 800.
- I think we want to buy a great-river me-1nv next year (+ an SPECK EQ and a RNC compressor).

But first we must buy a new mic..

We found these 2 to be a good buy.

Pearlman TM1 or Soundeluxe u195..
What do you think is the best mic to buy.

these is NO magic mic, try different ones and get what works on her voice.
why do you need to upgrade? you already have a neumann, look at upgrading your pre.

I don't have experience with recording vocals, but I play clarinet and was recorded with both dynamic and condenser microphones from Neumann, AKG, Shure, Audio Technica, and Beyerdynamic. The best results by far were with the Beyerdynamic microphones. The model if I'm not mistaken is MC740.

Of course, I didn't do a 100% accurate test. The engineer, console, acoustics, my reed, maybe my mouthpiece, were different with every microphone.

On the one hand, I agree that playing clarinet through them is not the best way to choose a vocal mic, but on the other, of the mics mentioned, the MC740 does indeed usually kill on female vocals. Good call, give it an audition...

we dont have the opportunity to try any of these mic out..
So we have to buy for a try...

The reason we want to replace the tlm103, is because we think it a little hard/harsh sounding - and we must often use alot of EQíng to get that sound we want out of it. - we want a better and more smooth high freq response.
We made a few vocal sessions in another studio that use u195, u99, c12 (with isa220 preamp) - and here it sounds better even without any EQing.

You could try the AT4060. I really like it! Like all ATs it doesn't look very cool, but it has a mellow vintage tube sound that is really nice at that price ($1000). I have only tried it with Focusrites (ISA and Red). At half that price AT4047 might be an option, which should be pretty much the same thing without the tube.

We just bought a Brauner Phantom C (Anniv. Edition) for our studio, which is an upgrade from our AKG 414.
It's fantastic, clean, airy, neutral, bright (just what you expect, not too much), with beautiful meds, non-agressive highs and a confortable low end.
I love it, it's high end gear.
