Thread Starter | Reasonably priced rack stereo EQ
Im looking for an EQ I can put in a outboard processing loop - after a compressor in my setup. Maybe to be used on the Masterbuss also...just to give some nice analogue bass lift into the mix and perhaps some 'air'...
So far in the affordable arena I can only see the Toft AFC2...just wondering if there are any other options?

There are many (semi)parametric EQs available.
Look for TL Audio, Klark Teknik DN410, Summit FEQ-50...

WIth 'reasonable' I meant sub $800 for 2 channel / stereo EQ

thinking outside the box a bit, hows bout an Aphex 109? Dirt cheap! Stereo two band parametric for each channel with shelf and peak options. can also couple the channels into one four-band. Jim Williams says he can mod it to sound really nice. I'm thinking of sending mine to him to see what he can do - possibly even taking the "toob" out of the signal path and throwing a toggle in there to invite it in or out. Could be a really nice unit at that point.

I also found out about Orban 42x EQs and the DBX 242 which might also be good.
With these lower end devices - do I need to worry about running my whole mix thru them? Is this risky in terms of degrading the signal?

I have the DBX 242 - excellent eq - I like it better than the Aphex - another one Jim Williams mods, tho doesn't need it as much as the Aphex.
If you're going for pieces that you WON'T mod from these, get 2 dbx 242's - they're on ebay alot and worth chasing. I hear the Orbans are usually kinda funky and hissy, tho they look cool. The orbans would almost definitely need refurbishing.
Degrading the signal? Well, any audio device will change the signal. Of these, the dbx is the lowest noise, as-is.
MANOMAN I wanna get my eq's modded now!

MANOMAN I wanna get my eq's modded now! | thanks for you help mate. can you comment on the low end of the DBX and the Aphex? I noticed that the freq pot of the Aphex has much more travel in the low range which might make it easier to dial in down there...

For just a little more but well worth the extra cost you might want to look at the JDK Audio R24.

interesting timing for that question. i spent a good chunk of today trying to match the Aphex 109 to a sound I achieved with a DBX 242. I couldn't. The Aphex sounded very metallic, nowhere near as surgical and nowhere near as "present' and forward-sounding. Maybe it's the 'toob' thing. i actually got a way better match using the eq on an ART pro channel, just shocked me. Jim Williams says the upgrade he does to the 109 gets rid of the phasing - sounds like a good idea.
The DBX is WAY easier to dial in any frequency, including the low end.

It's slightly above your price range but the Speck EQs are what I am trying to pickup these days. They seem to be the best of the lower priced EQs. A decent EQ at a low prices is pretty difficult to find. The Specks are nice too becase the ASC-T has the option for transformer and non-transformer output.
There are a pair of these in the classifieds for $850 - nice deal!

MANOMAN I wanna get my eq's modded now! | Recently bought a pair of the dbx 242's on ebay for less than $120 total! Man, very pleasantly surprised - flexible and they sound great. thumbsup
Has anyone here had the Jim Williams mod done to theirs? If so, how much of an improvement would you say that it made?
