Thread Starter | that famous IKEA desk...
I know this model of desk (actually called JERKER) is hugely popular in European home studios. Just wondering if it's as ubiquitous here in the US? There are 2 shelves that can be attached to each side, ideal for your monitor speakers. Sure, it's no Argosy or Omnirax, but for the price, it's pretty ergonomic. I've seen it pictured in more Sound On Sound and Future Music articles than I care to remember... http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...roductId=25905 |

Not sure about the Jerker, but I have an Omni-Raxx Pro workstation for about 5 years now, and they are built like crap! I have had to disassemble it twice to move it, and the particle board that its made of falls apart, and is pretty shaky as it is put together with wood screws. I had to use lots of wood filler both times to get it back together. I really love the design, and am thinking about have a carpenter use my desk as a template to build me one out of real oak, that is put together with threaded inserts and machine screws, so that it truly becomes a furniture grade piece. I am going to get a quote to determine the cost. I am done with particle board crap, and will only buy another workstation once, that is built for life! Just my .02, B |

Hey Krou! I have actually got one of these for my home studio. I inherited from the recording studio that I work for. What can I say? Is not the most good looking desk there is but I must add that it is fairly flexible and is quite strong. I got 2 massive CRT 19" Displays on the top rack (which weigh a ton) and on the bottom I got a Digi 002 a Manley Massive Passive, mouse, keyboard plus the weight of my arms, plus all the mess yu get when working (coffee mugs, glasses, ashtrays etc). My monitors don't sit on desk though, I bought some stands for them as the displays took all the room + you don't get the early reflections of the desk itself that causes comb-filtering. For the price (despite the fact that mine was free) I think they do the job pretty well. Gomez |

A good friend of mine has it in his studio and it looks quite nice. He has 2 17" LCDs on mid shelf, controller on the main table and his monitors on the optional swivel shelves. It's incredibly functional and looks great once the gear is on it...

I got one a few years ago and haven't regretted it since. I have my monitors on the swivel shelves and it works great. Two shelves above and there's plenty of desktop room as well. It's a great desk for the price. |

Jerker Desk table in foreground, Jerker Computer Desk with shelves (minus desktop) holding rack gear in background. I added some steel supports to the vertical upright bars. I found that the Jerker Computer Desk by itself was problematic for monitor speaker placement either on the desk (too narrow) or on the swivel shelves (too wide) because the optimal spot for the monitors is obstructed by the vertical upright support bars. Hence the larger Jerker Desk table. The combination works well for me. I have the PC case on one of the swivel shelves (lower right in the photo, black case just under the right edge of the desk). The swivel shelf works great for getting inside the case: just swivel the shelf out 90 degrees, open the side door of the case, and it's very easy to access the innards. |

everyone and their mother at osxaudio.com has a jerker in fact i think there's a jerker thread over there with tons of pics. me? i use this old 900lb. dinner table that just happens to be the perfect height and length. thumbsup old pic: http://66.221.205.118/adamjay/newworkstation.jpg latest pic with new shelf: http://www.djadamjay.com/files/AJ_Studio_2005.jpg i'd take a new one but you wouldn't see much under all the crap on my desk (sorting out some finances right now), but imagine a Drawmer DL241, Focusrite Compounder, FMR RNLA, a Mic, and a Trigger Finger scattered about. I'll probably be ditching the shelf when i get a new mixing console (either Soundcraft Delta DLX 16/4/2 or Soundcraft Series 600 16/8/2) this winter. |

my chepo desk is a StudioRTA. i think this thing is perfect for the price. http://www.rta-furniture-online.com/...ta_RTA14B.html i got it for $99 at Meijers (like a local Wallmart, same size just in the tri state area). i haven't moded it yet because i haven't got enough gear to need to BUT when it's time i will flip around the monitor stands so they hang off the desk and put two 19" computer monitors on the computer monitor level then have room for 2 rows 3U in height sitting snugly below the computer monitor level. there will still be room for a decent musical keyboard on the area in front of the rack mount gear on the level below the computer monitor. below that is the computer keyboard and the tower is out of the way at the bottom. this desk is on wheels also so it moves around real easy currently i have 2 KRK8's on the monitor stands and a 19" Crt and it fits perfectly. i still have room for my Altec Lansing computer speakers on the computer monitor level in between my computer monitor and the shelf for the studio monitors. what other desk looks this good, is this cheap, and for $10 (rack mount rails and a few screws and L brackets) hold this much stuff so nicely in a small space? |

the jerker is cool. problem was that the shipping cost more than the desk does.

maybe this will be helpful http://www.thefrankes.com/alex/rackbuilding/ this guy has some great step by step plans for making a really cool functional desk for around $100 or so. the plans include the way the wood should be cut out and he recommends going to a precision mill shop and having them cut it for you and you can get a nice sheet of oak cut and ready for nails and stain for around $70 he claims. the plans are $10 for all of his plans, the keyboard one is free. when i get rid of my Studio RTA i will prrbably build one of these because that cheap wood dosnt like the weight of a 19" CRT its starting to flex kind of bad i just recently noticed lol. |

Sadly, Ikea has discontiued the JERKER desk. I'm not sure what led to that decision, but it's unfortunate, as I recently acquired one and was hoping to get some accessories for it. BTW, if anyone has the extension shelf, or any add-ons that they're looking to unload, PM me. e2

I own both and, sadly, the Fredrik is no substitute for the Jerker. The Fredrik is in the kids' room. I certainly would not put the kind of weight (racks, monitors) on the Fredrik that I can put on my Jerker. Ikea has really gone downhill quality-wise lately in several of their product lines. Another example: Bonde being phased out and replaced with Besta. |

If you can get to a showroom, check it out. It wouldn't be bad for a smaller setup without a lot of weight. There are two sizes as I now recall and I have the smaller. Mine could not handle the amount of gear you see in the photo from a few years ago that I posted earlier in this thread. It is also not completely modular with accessories like Jerker was. One nice thing about IKEA is that often you can get ideas about how to cobble together elements that weren't necessarily intended to go together and they end up matching. The furniture is relatively inexpensive, so that kind of strategy is feasible. My photo above is sort of a Frankenstein job. It cost under $250 total and is a hybrid of a wider Jerker desk and the narrower Jerker computer station (uprights only, sans desk) with some extra shelves and drawers. | |

i have the jerker desk in my setup. it's definitely one of the best $100 i've ever spent in my studio. i've probably taken it apart and moved it about 10 times and it's still as sturdy as ever. the add-on side shelves for the my monitors are a little bit wider than i'd like but it's still pretty awesome. i'll post some pictures in a little bit

I have a jerker desk I am not using since I started building my own. I don't want to part it out but if anyone wants to buy it, PM me. I'm in NJ- shipping it would be insane- but if someone wants to come get it....

This is sad news. I didn't know about the popularity of the Jerker desk, but I was thrilled when I found it for my home studio. It's much sturdier and more practical than the expensive, heavy, yet easily breakable "studio" desk at the studio I work at most of the time. bb |

I haven't seen the JERKER in our local Ikeas, but I use two of the MÄSTØRBÆTØR models in my home studio. They do the job...

I looked at the ikea desk, and got this metal/glass one at staples instead for around $100 (think i got it for 75 on sale). it has a shelf on the left side that has my 1 speaker on top, rack in the middle, and odds and ends on the bottom. I happened to have another glass front rolling cart at the same exact height as the top shelf of this desk so it worked out. I get better spacing of the speakers compared to the jerker, I think Staples.com®. that was easy®. |

OK, here is where I actually have something to add for a change. MDF/Particleboard is really crappy. I'm using two of the cheapest IKEA desks available ($20 each or something) and wiht the computer pullout, they hold my excess stuff (MPD/BCF2000/MS20 etc) and I actually sell furniture as a dayjob. Particle board really only holds up 6mo-6yr depending on product. a 60% upcharge for Maple is a STEAL and it will hold up years longer than MDF. the company I work for makes custom desks and I keep trying to convince them to let me put together an audio desk except it would be about $1k which despite a lifetime warranty, is far more than most are willing to pay for a desk for audio for some reason... My advise, Decouple your monitors from real wood as they will really resonate while MDF is really dense and doesn't amplify frequencies the same... Just my take... Also, MDF has a BUNCH of formaldahyde (sp?) in it and it's really bad for your health.
