Broken Shure Unidyne III?

I've got a Shure Unidyne III PE54D I purchased second hand that I am afraid may be broken. I am getting a signal through it, but there is no low frequency end to what I am recording. When I recorded some vocals tonight just to test it out, it sounds like I am singing over a telephone line if you know what I mean...

Does anyone know if Shure will repair this thing? I had heard good things about this microphone as compared to the current "Made in Mexico" variety of SM57s. I don't mind spending another $50 or so to get it working properly, but I also want to make sure I am not missing anything.

Thanks for any insights!

Matt

In good shape, they sound no different to me than an SM57. Maybe a hair less bright. That's it.

You can send it in to be looked at, although they may just replace what's broken with Mexico 57 parts. But you may still have bragging rights due to the sticker around the barrel. Do it!

In my limited experience, I've found there's generally two things that go wrong with all 57s, either:
-the leads came undone from the transformer
-or-
-the very thin copper leads have detached from the diaphragm.

I have found the former problem is easy to fix while the latter is, for the most part, unfixable. At best, its a big waste of 'time vs. fix'.

Unscrew the main part of the body towards the XLR.
Look inside. If there is a wire loose, reattach and try the mic out.

The other thing to consider with old dynamics is that the diaphragm will dry out over the years. I have never seen a 57 (or its variants) have a bad transformer....

The policy I was aware of was that shure will replace broken 57s for about 65 bucks if you send them the broken mic.
