Sorry on more thread on the intreaguing subject of DIY pres. I have a few questions:

- from all the reviews SCA N72 sounds like a great product. I am curious what an equivalent manufactured pre-amp would cost.
- this one might be a stupid question. If I were to buy the chasis and only make one pre-amp for now, are there plates to cover the other empty slots? Did not see anything on the SCA website.
- does anyone know of a manufacturer that sells good tube amp pres?

Thanks in advance

Plates? You mean where the holes are for the pots and xlr ins and outs? No plates but there are plastic caps that plug up the front holes and metal plugs for the holes on the back.

I think there is something you can buy to put there. You might have to ask the guy at sca though if its not on their site.

Yes. I am assuming that the unused slots would have their openings exposed and should be covered until used.

If you look at my avatar you'll see the caps in the empty holes

There are a couple of Nevey pres from Great River. The MP1NV is a standalone version and the MP-500-NV is a 500-series version. People may argue whether they are really the same, but you can compare them price-wise to see what the difference is and you'll be as close as you can get.

The chassis ships with all of the holes covered. They aren't individual plates like you'd need for a 500 chassis, it's a solid faceplate with holes drilled for the shafts.

Yes. If you want some particulars, you'd need to provide more info. I'm a big Manley fan myself, but that's not really low-end. If you're thinking kits, then Hamptone is the way to go.

I would agree that the Great River is a good point of comparison for the N72, for fairly obvious reasons of roughly common heritage.

On the tube pre thing, if you are already thinking about DIYing, then look at Drip Electronics, which has a couple very high quality DIY tube pre-amps, as well as some other projects.
