Movie Soundtracks?

Well, decided to Google on Paranormal Activity today, to catch up on what it was about...

What struck me was the sounds on the trailer.

Seems to me, movie soundtracks are exceeding good sounding, high quality work. Granted, not songs per se, but interesting soundscapes that definitely get audience reaction.

Anyone know anything about how they are done? "Standard" sound effects, etc.?

Sound designers tend to have a huge library of stock sounds which they will use and manipulate in various ways, sometimes many times (like the famous "wilhelm scream).

Mainly a lot of synth manipulation of ambient noises etc.
