LOW COST GUITAR AMP for recording

Hi guys/gals..I want to get you "Low enders" opinion on a nice guitar amp, me being a "low ender" myself I need to spend as less as possible. I will mainly be recording rock/pop..maybe some funk type R&B....I just want something the will sound good clean and distorted...I will be tracking by myself one take at a time if that matters!! I know you get what you pay for but, I cant pay for a bogner..So I would like your opinions and, I appreciate them!! I would like to stay under $500.00, actually I would like to stay under $300.00 if possible.....thanks again!!

Buy Fender Super Champ XD Guitar Combo Amp | Hybrid Combo Amps | Musician's Friend

Have had some fun with this amp. amp modeling with tube circuitry. also vox makes cheaper stuff that gets that vox biteing tone pretty easily.

A 70's fender champ is perhaps one of the greatest amps for recording, ever

I would definitely take a look at either an Orange Tiny Terror or an Egnater Rebel. Both are great low-wattage recording amps.

The combo might be out of your price range, but if you already have a speaker cabinet the head version can be had for around $400.

not sure if you just need an amp or an amp and speaker cab.

i've recently had fantastic results with an Orange Tiny Terror. you can find those real cheap used. I had it going through an Emperor 4x12 with 70s rola celestion g12m25s though.

you can find a 70s Fender champ used for around $300. then you don't have to worry about speaker cab.

had good luck with 70s Ampeg V4 and a Sovtek mig100h. you can maybe get those for under $500 if you look hard.

who cares about Bogner anyway. I'd only want one so that I could sell it and get something good.

Well my father has played all his lfe and he really wanted one so I just figgured that it would be a nice amp..I am a jack of all trades and really just want something that sounds halfway decent when you put a mic in front of it!!!

Does the tiny terror do clean pretty good? My dad has cabs I can get!!

Hi RTR--

I love my Epiphone Valve Jr. head--it's VERY modifiable. (I see that they're up to $220 now--I understand why.) You can buy ready to drop-in circuit boards set up for "Fenderish", "Marshallized" or "Voxy" for around $100. I installed a big transformer in mine but I understand that the newer models don't need it. Another $50 for decent tubes and you've got a fine recording amp.

Good luck!

Egnater is pretty good. I definitely prefer it to the Tiny Terror, which sounds kind of dull to me. There's always ebay, too!

Those Blackheart amps are very affordable as well, but I've only heard a few clips (which weren't bad).

you know, even expensive boo-teek ampz don't cover clean & dirty equally as well, usually heavily favoring one or the other.

the super champ is the swiss army knife option for sure. emulates all kinds of tones and its pretty warm and versatile. also comes with effects nice package for the money.

I love my Egnater Rebel 20 for this. I also just picked up the Vox AC4TVH, haven't put in too many hours with it yet, but from what I am hearing so far It's damn nice. It comes in a combo too if you do not already have a cabinet.

To save costs I've switched to a Gretsch g5222 practice amp as it's all tube and reacts lovely to guitar dynamics. To deal with the speaker issue I had a buddy install a speaker out to my Vox Night train cab which has a green back. I love the tone, and use distortion pedals for the over drive. Great sound.

Got everything for less than $430.

That VOX sounds real good ..BUT..it does have the "VOX" sound to it..I just wounder if that would work for every song I do..I am going to have to go to my local guitar center "BRO" and hear it!

My votes go out to the following four amps:
1. Vox AC4TV combo or head and a good cab (I use the cab and I'm planning to order an Orange 1x12" cabinet with an Eminence Red Fang speaker)
2. Orange AD5 Combo
3. Fender Champ (silver or blackface)
4. Blackstar HT5

It does have "Vox" qualities but if you roll back the tone it can actually get pretty thick almost like a Marshall. Thus far I've found it to be highly versatile.

Agreed! The tone knob really effects the overall sound a bit more than I had anticipated. Also it takes to pedals nicely. A couple of OD's and you're set.
