Thread Starter | TASCAM DP008 or ZOOM R16? Any one know if u can trim & quantize parts on either?
Hello, I'm new to this so hopefully you'll all be gentle wityh me. Im just getting back into recording and grew up with an old school 4 track recorder. Im not a fan of Cubase and PC recording and I'll admit to not being particularly tech-y! As such, I was looking for the best budget (less than 300-350quid) standalone digital multitrack recorder. I'm weighing up the Tascam DP-008 and the Zoom R16 but could be directed elsewhere if there are others out there that are better options. Ideally I'd like the option to record a bar of music onto a track and then duplicate loops of that same bar of music throughout the remainder of that same track. So, the thing I'm trying to find out is this: does anyone know if either of the above products allow you to record a part and then trim and quantize what youve recorded before copying it throughout the rest of the track as desired? If anyone who has a DP-008 or R16 could enlighten me as to whether this functionality is inbuilt, it would be greatly appreciated. As would any general advice on which of the two (or others) you'd recommend for standalone budget recording? Many thanks folks... |

Zoom R16 $400 ish Tascam DP008 $300 ish Zoom R16 has more going for it but: I have a DP008.......and it would be my recommendation...comming from 4tracking. It will cut/paste bars etc. More intuitive than the Zoom and less menu/button pushing. I would imagine the Zoom does (repeat/edit bars) also.....it (Zoom) has one input for each track(channel) where the Tascam only has two total....so I use a small mixer to feed the single IN. Search the Tascam and Zoom Forums. P.S. If you go Tascam.......get the wallwart power supply(not included). The DP008 burns through the AA batteries quickly. $$$$$$$ |

The ZOOM won't let you trim/quantize but it does ship with Cubase 4 LE (which you've mentioned you don't like) so you could record on the ZOOM, copy the .wav over to the PC & do further work on it. For standalone budget recording imo the ZOOM is excellent. You can record up to 8 tracks at 24-bit depth rate (playback 16), has phantom power on two inputs, 2 built-in mics (people who've used them say they're pretty good), one Hi-Z input. It uses SDHC Cards so no noise + very easy to move your material around, can run off batteries and is very light. Can also be used as an interface and a controller. Has some minus points but for the price ..... |
