Good quality Hi-Fi subwoofer in Protools project/edit studio?

Hi guys,

Do some of you have experience with the use of a good quality consumer subwoofer in a studio environment?

I might be able to get my hands on a reatively cheap B&W ASW-650 12" subwoofer. It's specs and reviews are pretty darn good for the asking price (it's used, but appearantly in good condition). It's a sealed box, which is a selling point in my eyes. It's known as "unobtrusive", in that it's precise, delivers low distortion and doesn't rattle the windows, unless you ask for it. It's said to only deliver really tightly controlled, deep low bass, even at low listening levels.

That, and concidering the fact that I plan to use it only in the sub 50Hz range, might make it a really good option, since I don't need excessice SPL's. I plan on using it with either ADAM A7's or P11a's, or Dynaudio BM6a mkI's.

The downside is, that is has no XLR in- or outputs (RCA-in only), so I'll need something like an active cross-over, or a monitor controller with a secondary output in parallel or a dedicated subwoofer output.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

James.

Unbalanced connection should not be a problem, the A7s have RCA input connections.
Volume is about 14db lower in unbalanced connection but should be plently left in your avarage control room.

Why would you need a cross over ?

The sub already has one.

Or are you planning for a setup where you can control the sub's volume seperatly from mains?

I'd like to be able to bypass the sub, so that when bypassed, the mains cover the full range. An active (digital) crossover or monitor controller might be useful for that. Also, it would be nice if the sub 50Hz region would be taken away from the (small) mains. It would take some load off their small woofers and amps.

Well thats the main porpuse of the sub's intergral active cross over.
Regarding bypassing, you do need a bass managment controler.
Havent seen one for a studio, more targeted toward PAs.
