Just wondering if any of you are using vintage headphones to listen to mixes. I know most oldschool headphones usually had some plastic/rubbery pads, but a few actually sounded pretty cool. Anyone out there using vintage headphones to mix?

I have Russian vintage headphones, lmfao those things suck, they don't even have foam/soft pads, just straight hard plastic on your ears. HAHAHAHAH

Wouldn't expect them to have good frequency response either, since I have a vintage Stereo Amplifier that only goes to 16khz, and start at like 50-60hz if I remember correctly.

I was thinking about this same thing the other day; I saw some sweet vintage looking cans at Goodwill and thought they would make some cool looking tracking headphones if nothing else. But they were $10, which I could get new guitar strings or something. Oh well.

Just cause they look cool, don't mean they sound cool, but HEY if they are comfortable, you can go for that vintage vibe

Are you engineering in Gilbert, or doing your own productions/self recording?

Goodwill's been bumping up their prices a lot lately, I've certainly been buying less from them. I guess they're depending on the eBay speculators to keep them going.

I use an old pair of Fostex headphones for tracking, they're pretty comfortable, sound good, and I didn't spend any money on them.

I was looking into the fostex headphones too since they always seem to be around in videos of oldschool tracking sessions, and they also look pretty cool. I found a pair of Koss HV/XLC headphones on ebay though, still with the original box and basically "new". Got em for 25 dollars.

They're here now, and after removing the rotting foam pads (these things are 7 years older than me), I added some leather cup pads and interestingly enough, they give me a nice image of the bass response I usually don't get on my Audio Technica ATH-M50's. Kinda cool...

here's a link to these things.

HV-XLC

and a pic of em before I took off the foam pads:

NICE! They look cool. Look very professional actually.

And after falling in love with Shure SM7B, you get a pass on that wristband

True- they reminded me of some vintage war headphones from MASH or something; green and hard plastic haha. I was going to test them out in the store but they didn't have a functioning radio or anything I could plug it into.

Thing about vintage gear: Some crap, some good, some costs thousands of dollars.

I'm always looking for that "costs thousands of dollars" type gear, that people think is crap, but is actually good, and you end up buying it cheap as hell.
