Hey all! So, I am thinking it's time to invest in some better pre amps. Basically, stuff that will be pretty versatile. I was thinking of going with an API lunchbox and possibly 2 Chameleon Lab's 7602's? What I want to do is be able to have 8 - 10 channels for drums, room mic's, and then have them be versatile enough to be able to do guitar, bass, vocals, etc. My budget is about $2000 or there about, but I am willing to sacrifice less inputs for better preamps. I mostly do heavier punk stuff (converge, modern life is war, his hero is gone, tragedy, etc.). Any help would be much appreciated! I am trying to build a somewhat analog studio with the only digital component is the editing abilities of pro tools, other wise it will mostly be analog outboard gear, etc. Thanks! |

You can get a luncbox and 2 512c for about that....and you will love the 512c preamps....you will get great levels on whatever you run through it.

for $2000, i would look into a used api 3124+. that would be a great 4 channel option. check out the pacifica for 2 channels of awesome. for sheer versatility, i would look at a used pair of 7602's and a sytek mpx-4aii. that'll give you 6 channels. for 8 channels of clean, check out the true precision 8.

+1 on the True Systems, though they don't have pads on them, which might pose an issue if you record heavy hitting rock stuff. Otherwise I hear they are amazing.
