Freeware VST plugins

Hi all,

Just interested in your experiences and thoughts with your favorite shareware VST plugins. Soft synths, sequencers, effects? Are there any that you've tried that come anywhere close to the big names?

Try the digitalfishphones stuff. Spitfish gets a lot of respect for being one of the best de-essers around (it beats ALL my paid de-esser plugins!), while Blockfish is a very good all-around track compressor.

The one I use the most is Bionic Delay, which is a very cool primitive delay that responds well to automation of feedback. The longer it feeds back on itself, the more the sound quality deteriorates in a tape fashion.

check out kvraudio.com its a great resource for free VST's, both effects and instruments....

my personal free favorites are the Kjaerhus classic compressor & classic limiter, the Voxengo MSED mid-side encoder/decoder, and the Roger Nichols Inspector plugin (great analysis plug I use on almost every single mix)

Hello. I'm visiting from kvraudio, where we (theoretically) talk about this stuff all the time, and this seems as good a place as any to de-lurk. Along with the afore-mentioned digitalfishphones suite, Kjaerhus' Classic series and the SimulAnalog suite of guitar gearsims were once the gold standard of free FX plugs, and they still hold their heads up high. However, plugs from Bootsy and Togu Audio Line have pretty much stolen the spotlight. I'm still searching for the Holy Grail in software reverbs, but GlaceVerb (also mentioned above) is great.

If I had a lotta lotta lotta cycles to spare, I'd put several instances of Nebula3Free on everything, and call my search permanently over! lol

I don't use much in the way of synth plugs -- basically a couple of samplers. Sfz has its own programming language that lets you accomplish all sorts of tasks. Crystal is somewhat comparable to Absynth, Synth1 is infinitely useful, and I adore Crazy Diamonds. (Shine on, you...)

I love the Simple Squeeze and the Limiter from the BetaBugs folk.

I also love, love, love the free IIeq plug from DDMF. And the only restriction on their demos is that you can't save the settings.

+1 on KVR and Rekkerd.org for being great resources.

Another fan of the digitalfishphones plugs. BLOCKFISH is a great drum mix compressor, especially in complex mode for the big room, Bonham sound. Also can be a nice mixbus comp if used sparingly. Also check out the Blue series plugs at kvr.com, the comp is highly colored and sometimes just the right thing when you need an aggressive sound on a track. Last but far from least, the Tim Brooke Tales TLs 2095 limiter..........killer on either electric or upright bass, kick or snare.

Honestly, most are toys and a waste for serious work. A few are pretty good though.

Synths
Proteus
Yellow Tools
Superwave
GTG stuff

Effects
Kjaerhus Classic Series
Digital Fishphones
Audio Damage RoughRider

There are a few more but I can't recall their names right now

The retro delay by e-phonic is a pretty good delay. I used it all the time.

Thought I'd revive this thread ---

I was disappointed to find out that Kjaerhus was no longer up and running, as it had my favorite freeware with their "classic" line (their buyable stuff was also fantastic).
Digitalfishphone.com has some great freeware plugs as well. Blockfish seems to be a favorite freeware compressor for many.

Just wondering if anyone has come across any new freeware in the last several months that you would consider hidden gems.

Some of Sir Elliot's stuff is great. I have Ozone Izotope that I'll slap on the master bus to faux-master projects, but lately I've been using the stock reaper plug ReaEQ, Sir Elliot's Universal Compressor, and finally the KJaurhuas Master Limiter and I'm loving the results. Sir Elliot has some seriously cool plugs.

I have the KJaurhaus Classic stuff saved in a couple different places, so if one PC goes down, I've got backups. :-) Those are great plugs. For some reason, the Classic Compressor is my go-to vocal compressor.

Some of the Antress Modern stuff is good too. I like the Polo Killer and Lost Angel plugs.

Liquidsonics Reverberate LE convolution reverb is awesome...my go-to reverb.

I used to have an awesome Space Echo/Echoplex emulator called "Karlette" (sp?) but it -- or perhaps I -- didn't survive the port to OSX, so I haven't used it in ages.
