Best A/d Under $1000

I'm looking for y'all to weigh in on the best A/d under $1000 dollars.

1 channel, two, ten, doesn't matter

I have an M box and a motu 828 mkII my impression is the motu gets me a better end product with my u87/gemini II to portico pre/comp

I'm trying to smarten up my signal chain is there anything out there?
Is the 828 more or less the best I can get?

The Black Lion Audio Sparrow is a lot of converter if you only need 2 channels and have an AES or SPDIF RCA input available on your DAW interface. I would certainly consider that unit as something special in the under $1k range.

Hey Warren,
What about an 8-channel, adat i/o d/a converter? The Aphex 141, or what?
Thanks!

Those really are nice little units, the 141 will work with 44.1 or 48k sample rates. The 142 (analog to ADAT converter) is strictly 48k.

Those boxes were designed for Aphex's digital snake system but tons of 002 / 003 users are using them and liking them.

Thanks!
Have you worked with them?
How do you think the Aphex jobbies compare to Apogee or RME?

Well I would not put them quite there, but for utilitarian converters they are quite good and won't get in the way of anything.

Very good value / sound.

I have a nice RME ADI-8 i picked up second hand for £600
before that I was just using the A/D on my 002 which is awful.....

The difference between the sound of my recordings then and now is amazing I will never look back.

for $1000 I'm sure you will be able to pick up something very nice to clean up your A/D, if you can grip a a apogee or RME from the classifieds I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

Personally apogees sound better to my ears than RME's but thats just a matter of personal preference RME and Apogee both produce fantastic converters.

I haven't heard or used the aphex A/D so I cant comment on them.

I'm breaking a cardinal rule and recommending something I've never used, but an awful lot of people would say best converter <$1k is Apogee Duet.

Sparrow is definitely good. Had one and loved it. It was a step up from the Emu 1820m I had had. Got a Mytek and kept it. I like it a tad better than the Sparrow. Some argue that the Sparrow is better, which shows they are pretty close and its a matter of taste.

Is BLA planning a d/a or better yet, a $900 2 channel a/d/a. The market is crying for a no frills rock solid sub $1000 a/d/a. Rosetta 200 is great, but just too close in price to an 8 channel Lynx Aurora.

I remember hearing that they were planning an a D/A, but have not heard anything since. The idea of an A/D D/A sounds really nice though.

Lucid ADA8824 (used). ADAT, Spdif, AES, WC, 8 channels in and out on XLR, and sounds great. Only does up to 48k, but gives you DA that you can use for monitoring as well. It's very hard to beat at the $7-800 used price.

I know plenty of people will poopoo this but the ada8000 is not bad at all. For 200 bucks it's really a fantastic bang for the buck. I know it's not something you hear much when discussing Behringer but it is one their only peices of gear that I really don't mind owning.

I said I would never buy Behringer. Then I ate my words. I've been looking at it as simply an ADAT to analog to feed 8 headphone amps via Pro Tools A-F sends. I don't even need the A/D side, just D/A.

Never say never, eh?

I just got an email from BLA, I was enquiring about the now Discontinued Sparrow. Apparently it is discontinued because they are working on a new ADC and also a brand new DAC so keep an eye on their website for updates

Great ADC and DAC

Saw a lot of difference between it and my 1820m.

How about speaker management with active crossover for sub?

I have an apogee duet and it sounds great. Spend $495 on that and use the other $500 for other upgrades. This only applies if you are using Mac though.

That would be really nice, there aren't any really good DACs around for low-end money. Just s/pdif in and xlr out, with discrete headphone amp please

I second that. Was using my Echo Layla24 converters (comparable to the older RME multiface)... the Lucid really brought up the quality of my recordings. Hands down the best investment I've made in my studio.
