big difference between RME multiface and fireface convertor quality?

I was wondering if there was a big difference in quality between the convertors on the RME multiface and fireface.

I don't need the other features of the fireface so the multiface is very tempting at about half the price.

I've just spent a rather more of my budget on my monitors (dynaudio bm6a) and analogue desk (mint soundcraft 6000) than I expected. I also need to save some money for room treatment. I'd like to save money in the short term by not buying the very newest digital gear, if possible. Would saving money with the multiface be a big mistake?

Then eventually I could upgrade to the lynx aurora later on as money allows?

Excellent question. Does anyone have experience with both? I would like to know also...

Me too, especially with the new MultiFace II. Could make a nice I/O expansion for my Fireface.

I might try the RME newsgroups and post the reponse here....there's lots of second hand multifaces about so the answer would be nice to know.

Yeah, the pre's on the Fireface I'm told are nothing to write home about

...Another curious mind here.

the pres on the FF800 are indeed nothing great. I let go a ton of gear over the past couple years for money-reasons but kept the FF800 since it has pre's. they suck. thin, brittle...BUT, the converters are killer and I know this since back when I had my outboard pre's (Trident, Wunder, Grace Design) the tones I put to "tape" via the FF were stellar. i used to have a stock 002, which had lousy converters and I imagine the pre's were on par with the FF tho.

now, I would like to sell the FF since I only need good conversion and I want to pick up a couple outboard pres (Chameleon Labs or something cheap and nice like that). id love a Benchmark A/D/A...but that defeats my purposes in financial sense...

also, the FF800 is desireable, since I want to pick up (or build) an 8-channel Folcrom-like Summing box eventually...

so, bottom line: i dont know what the hell i want.
