| scrubs makes a valid point -- the differences between chains (mics, pres, comps, whatever) can be masked by heavy processing.

still sounds like it needs a little work.. compression and eq maybe? but I do agree that 1 punches right through the speakers... So I'd choose that one to work with I think...

eq is pretty basic cutoff and a dip on the low mids maybe i should work on the second mix to make em stand out more? first mix i feel like it stands out way too much and makes me sound nasal and weird

I like #1 version better. Both sound good. Catchy tune. Nice job. Sounds like a modern record to me. (This from a 50 year old Beach Boys fan) |

I think #2 sounds better. Also, you did a good job on the song, however, I would cut back on the amount of Autotune. It's not nearly as evident/obvious in the original version. |

I vote strongly for number 1 (which I'm entirely sure is the SM7): smoother, thicker, and less polluted with room noise. Nice work on the song. |

also i'll add that both were recorded in the exact same circumstances (same room, same vocal booth, same preamp, same cable, same converters, same macbook, same faggot singing etc) number 2 does have a bit more plate reverb i believe though

not really a good scenario to a/b mics but I would go with a sm7 over a nt-1 any day. Nt-1s can sound OK, but they have a very tinny cheap sound that I don't like, from my experiences. There are a bunch of other good mics out there in that price range

hmmm... I'm not sure. No.1 sounds "warmer" but it has some kind of boxyness to it that I like a little bit less, maybe it just needs to be mixed better? It's a little bit hard to tell with all the tuning effect. No.2 seems to fit this song a little bit better to me, I didn't listen in my studio though. |

maybe not in this song but i generally have a raspy-ish voice when hitting high notes and with the rode nt1-a being a hash mic it just didn't sound very good at all i actually have 2 rode nt1-as atm (one is borrowed) and even though they're a bit harsh i think they're still pretty useful i guess

Not nearly enough autotune on those takes! But seriously, I don't think either of the takes sound "polluted with room sound" !??!?! - maybe that comment was a joke... I like the thicker, smoother, more natural sound of the sm7b (clip2) But for this mix where the track itself is very hyped in the highs, and autoned, the more hyped mic works nicely too. Both mics work here. |

| I can see why it'd be taken as a joke, but I was being serious -- granted, I'm listening on my netbook, but you can hear some "business" (read: reflections) in the 2nd take compared to the 1st. Man, I'm fighting a bout of cognitive dissonance right now: that first take sounds so smooth! Smooth like Loggins! How can that be the Rode?
