Cheapest way to PT 24/96 Digital I/O and Dongle?

I need the cheapest way to PT 24/96 (< 48 tracks) and I'm going to bypass any related analog and converter hardware.

My Research tells me it's PT 8.0 M-Powered with an Audiophile 2496 all at about $300 new.

Is this correct?

This is probably a silly question, but why do you need Pro Tools? If money is an object there are lot's of other programs that don't require proprietary hardware.

Just wondering...

I should have mentioned that I only need 4 channels of 2496 in and 2 channels of 2048 out.
Therefore I only need S/PDIF In/Out. Any other hardware features will not be used.

Also, I'm going PT because I'll be recording rhythm beds at a high end studio, transfering to PT there and bringing the project home to do overdubs and editing and then back to high end studio to mix OTB.
You know, I'd like to try something other than PT but everyone has it and I'm afraid I'll come unstuck transfering projects between programs.
