Art MPA gold VS. GAP-73

I was wondering if anyone has tried these to pre's out and what they thought about the differences. I am thinking of getting the gap-73 and would like to know if it is any better/different than the mpa...thanks!!!!thumbsup

You can hear both these pres in a tune I just posted up! The mpa gold is on the overheads, electric guitar sm57 & apex 205 mics and mxl m3 lead vocals. The pre 73 is on the kick d112, electric guitar mxl m3, backing vox & superlux r102 mic on the bass. Not exactly a fair comparison though

i'd consider keeping the mpa. its a great unit for...just about everything. not always the go-to, but sounds good on a lot of sources.

that being said, the GAP has a great tone, less warmth, but the ones i've played with are modded...so take that with a grain of salt.

I found the MPA to be too noisy for any critical recording and from my experience from using one with NOS Telefunken tubes I wouldn't recommend it for use with an SM7b.
I had better results using the SM7 with my M-Audio Tampa than the MPA.

GAP-73 sure has juice for every need once you know the gain staging.
Btw. The MPA isn´t an all tube preamp if someone thinks so -if that matters

Not saying the ART ain't cool, but my Avalon that I paid $1750 for (Merc edition) is getting seriously rivaled by the GAP-73. Little red bast*rd is magic I tell ya.

yeah, RTR, the neve clones are dripping with gain. the CL 7622's i have(which are similar to the GAP) have tons of gain. i don't have an sm-7b(yet!), but the 7622's have no problem with my ribbons.

That's great man..I never really got any noise from the mpa when I pushed it..but I just did not like it..just knowing I had everything cranked bothered me!!!1

The GAP is a high end sounding piece with a low end price!

I have been using 2 since they first came out and they are really good, great on everything, main vocals guitars drums etc, I don´t use it much on bass though.

I have never tried the ART but I think the SPL GoldMike is a better dual channel tube pre for about the same price. Check it out!
