Thread Starter | adding in a sub with logic 8 and cuemix
i just got a yamaha yst-sw40 sub from a thrift store, and i was thinking of adding it to my mixing setup. if i take 150hz and under out of my rokit rp5's, and use the sub, wont that give me more clarity in the mids and highs? my main question is whether or not i have to get a hardware crossover. i would use the sub's crossover, but the only outputs on the sub are 4 speaker wire terminals, no trs, xlr, etc.. which are the only inputs on my rp5's. i use logic 8 and cuemix with a motu 896 mk3. so far all i could come up with was taking everything under 150 out of the stereo bus, and sending all the tracks to another bus, and equing everything OVER 150 out of that bus, then routing those via cuemix to hardware outputs, and connecting the sub and my rokits accordingly, but that seems like a bit of a pain and inefficient.. So overall, 1. could i wire the output on the sub to an rca to go to the rokits? 2.would it make my mixing setup better to even go through the trouble? 3. how much thought do you have to put into the crossover frequency- can you just "earball" it? thanks in advance. btw my room is an extra bedroom in my house, average size, pretty well treated with alot of 6 inch trapping in the corners. it sounds pretty nice and tight. early reflections are all covered too incase someone wanted to attack that before getting to my actual question

It all depends on your monitors, you should look at the freq response graph and see where your monitors start rolling off. Average monitors roll off anywhere from 60-80hz. 150hz is WAY too high to get a good setup for mixing in my opinion. Looks like your monitors are only good down to 53hz or so. I would assume the roll off starts around 80-85 hz. So a crossover around 80-90hz should be okay. |
