How do you tame overloaded preamp signal?

People ocassionally talking about overloading preamps. I want to try this out, but when I go straight from the preamp to A/D the signal is too hot. What do you use to tame the post preamp signal in a mixerless chain?

i've been looking for schematics for an adjustable "-40db pad".
but how would one wire such a thing, since it's balanced/H-padded?

If your preamp does not have a input and output level. Like GR NV1.
Then maybe run it through a compressor mainly using it to reduce the level or a inline PAD XLR adapter on the output.
I have done this with my API's before Padded the output instead of using the pad on the API inputs.

I saw this recently, A-Designs ATTY

For around 100 bucks though.

The ATTY was made for this situation, and passive monitor control.

The ATTY seems like just the thing. Especially with the variable level control.
Thanks for the tip. Now this has me eyeing the ATT 2'D to serve for preamp experiments, monitor control, and to fill another rack space.

My long-time friend Rick Chinn has a good article about pads:

The ATTY2'D won't be out until shortly after AES is my understanding, it's simply 2 stereo pots and 2 mono pots. I've been using one here with my setup with good success, it's very clean and the individual and master mutes are handy.
