the senheiser hd280s are a great starter pair of headphones, but if your room sounds bad that's going to be a problem for tracking as well as mixing. also, you shouldn't ONLY mix on headphones...although sufjan stevens mixed all of his "michigan album" on just a pair of akg's

In the $200 price range I'll give a vote to Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro.

Haven't tried Sennheiser HD280 or the Audio Technica, so I got no idea how DT 770 Pro compares to those. Maybe someone else here does?

There was another thread on this a few days ago which went into detail comparing different headphones. The consensus is to go with DT770s. While headphones alone won't give you a foolproof, portable mix, the beyers are a good starting point.

I have the dt770s and my biggest complaint is that they are very bass heavy.
I've heard the dt880s and will say that they are quite a bit smoother.

With that being said, I still keep my dt770s as tracking headphones! I love the closed back. Talk about silent =)

i agree with all of this

i picked up a pair of HD280 5 years ago and found them to be very functional for the $100 price tag. I recently moved up to the Beyer DT880's and I am loving them. If the price is too steep, the 770 is obviously a great alternative, however, the 880 is where its at for me. i too found the 770 to be a bit heavy on the bass. the 880's semi-open design in great. the 280 is now my "cheap" tracking headphone.
