Thread Starter | Finally buying some moniters...I think. Dynas over the A7's?
Looking to pick up some monitors very soon. Hoping to pick up a used Bm5a's for around $700 but had a few questions. I know the Adams are usually recommended around here but a couple of days ago I mixed at a friends who uses them as his "B" set and they seemed overly bright to me. I kept switching back to his JBL's (8" woofer) and was pleased with my overall mix. I remember the Dyna's being a bit darker when I a/b them (months ago now) and am hoping these will fit my needs. Obviously I want an accurate monitor and am hoping the Dyna's will fit the bill without sounding as bright as the A7's. Does this sound correct? |

Any way to get both in your studio for a trial? Most monitors these days have some degree of HF adjustment on the back....

I don't think the Dynes are as detailed in the mid range, but they are an excellent speaker to work with. Smoother sound. The A7s are bright set flat, but mine have the tweeter at -1 and HF EQ at -1 and they matched our big ATCs very well. I find the A7s faster than the dynes as well- great for getting compression right.

Real test, though, is listening trials, preferably in your own room.

I appreciate very much the detail and clarity in the A7 mid-high range, and the fast transient response in the bass. Although I don't have the dyns to A/B, heared them on different location, and I don't think they are even close in detail. The A7 may exagerate a bit that mid-high range, but it is not a bad thing IMO, and it's easy to correct if you want. |

I recently was going through the same debate and ended up paying the few extra dollars on athe A7's. No regrets what so ever. I have found that mix's done with the A7's translate well on just about everything i listen through and the clarity and imaging of the A7's really point out the flaws in the mix. If a mix sounds great the A7's, it will sound great almost everywhere. Same with the opposite. Although, if you arent looking to mix, the BM5A's might make a better choice if you are just listening to CD's on them. . . . Hope this helps! |
