V67 Problem

Hey guys. Just bought an MXL V67 (Green and Gold) off ebay.
Just wanted another well rounded low end male vocal mic for my collection.
This mic was sold as Brand New.

I am having a problem with it though.

Whenever I plug it in, there is a noise almost like wind is constantly being blown at it.

I did a noise floor shoot out with 2 other comparable mics and the other two were nowhere near as extreme. I will post the files in a few minutes.

So as stated, this sounds like wind being blown at the capsule regardless of the volume its at. Very annoying because I like the sound of the mic, but the noise isn't suitable.

Sometimes it goes away if I unplug then replug, but comes back within a minute or so.

I e-mailed the seller, and he'll happily take the mic back and refund me less original shipping costs, but it took 3 weeks to get here for $25 in the first place, and I don't want to spend another $25 to ship it back for another 3 weeks only to get refunded $75 via paypal. It's an unnecessary runaround.

I don't really have the knowledge to go tinkering with the guts of it. But right off hand I would say it is a bad cap.
That is just a guess though.

Are there any other ideas or remotely easy fixes I can do instead of sending it back and causing anymore headache over it?

Thanks.

sounds like a job for mjoly!!! granted, it'll cost you way more, but i am willing to bet he will not disappoint for a bum mic you have now. maybe talk to MJ, he may have some scrap capsules laying around that he's pulled....

Don't see any reason that you should have to pay for return shipping on a defective item bought from a reputable seller. If the mic was sold 'New' then it should have a warrantee. Tell them its defective and you want a refund and buy elsewhere.

Sorry for your apparent bad luck. Hopefully they'll rectify the issue.

DO NOT let this guy screw you! If he expects you to pay shipping on a bad mic (overpriced shipping to boot) then go directly to PayPal and file a claim. I was in a similar situation and PayPal made sure I got the full ammount refunded (minus the $10 it cost me to ship the mic back). If you need any advice, hit me up via PM.

Cool. Thanks for the advice guys.

Yeah, I e-mailed him, and he said if I shipped it back he would refund me the $75 for the mic, but no word about the original $25 shipping.
If he refuses to refund that, I'll take it up with paypal.

It just bums me out, pretty much like waiting 6 weeks for absolutely nothing.
(Being in Canada sucks for buying audio gear in the US)

That's funny how a "new" mic didn't come with a warranty card or any information isn't it?

Have you made sure it's not just condensation on the diaphragm?

No, I haven't. Only managed to take off the chassis and pop a quick peek. That's something I'll have to do when I get home.
Thanks!

Just return it, and start looking someplace else besides the bay for mics!

Good luck, and dont let this guy screw you over.

+1...the sound you describe is exactly what a damp diaphragm will make...with all the rain around the country, there's a good chance that it may have gotten damp in shipping...dry it out before trying to return it...
