Thread Starter | Genelec 8050A for Home Playback - Best connection to a laptop? My first post here...and my first stupid questions. 1. Can I connect the XLR inputs in the genelecs to the S/PDIF output on my dell laptop dock? Will this produce beter sound than miniplug to XLR (my current connection...I realize this connection sucks, but is only an interim solution). 2. Which are good choices for a soundcard and a DAC to add to the system? Do I need a seperate soundcard if I install a DAC? Keep in mind I have a laptop and not a desktop. Budget = US$ 1 - 2k. As you might have surmised, this is more for home plaback than complex mixing/recoding purposes...for now. Aim is to have a "decent" sounding system, rather than the best. Thanks much, Max ![]() |

| i use a RME ADI2 to connect my macpro spdif out to my 8250s AES inputs. I could use the analog outs of the ADI2 to connect with the analog inputs but i prefer to stay digital. In the case of the 8050s you have to use ana nalog connection. With your budget you could buy yourself some nice sounding DA converter. There are lots of choices. The ADI2 is rather inexpensive but good sounding. Benchmark is twice as expensive and sounds great too.

| 2-track output from Laptop Hi, I would try out a Benchmark USB DAC, which also has Toslink inputs. It has xlr outs to your Genelecs and a fine headphone amp/output as well. The one without USB, with BNC & optical INs, is less than $1,000 and the USB version is about 13, I think. If your laptop has optical OUT, you're fine but if it's rca, then you'l need a converter. You should be very satisfied with the sound you get, especially if you pull those 8050s away from the walls and put 'em on Atlas mic stands. No need for a sound card change but I would temporarily disable the laptop sound card to prevent sample rate disputes between software apps. Have fun with it! WT |

Thread Starter | Many thanks Dr Wu and audibell, many thanks for your response. I'm planning to trying out the following: 1. Benchmark DAC1 (without USB) 2. psaudio Datalink III 3. Cambridge audio DAC MAGIC 4. Apogee mini DAC 5. One of the RME products EMU 1616M used to come with a PC Card for laptops, but apparently has been discontinued. Are there shops that let you try out the equipment (loan/rent)? I'd hate to buy 5 of these and send 4 back, losing the manufacturer some money. Thanks again for your advice. Max |
