Joly modded C1

Has anyone had the capsule and basket on a Studio Projects C 1 mic modded by Michael Joly yet? If so, did it sound good ?? What are the most apparent differences? Does it eliminate the hi-frequency 'spike' these mics are known for ?

Other than my own C1, I've only installed Peluso CEK-89 capsules in clients SP C1 mics so far. The CEK-89 is still a K67-type capsule so the mic remains bright, but it is much less harsh with the CEK-89.

My own MJE-K47 capsule is only three weeks old and I'm starting to do regular installations of it in clients mics, but none into a C1 yet.

Why do people worry about spikes in a mic's range? A rise in energy at a given range is easy to fix. If a mic has a DROP in energy at a given range, now THAT would be a problem.

Mike when we gonna "hear" the MJE-K47???

I want to hear if my Mahogany King 319 is still the champ for urban legend U47ish vocals.

I see. Are there any working clips with this new capsule you may have, as of yet?

Not yet, but lots in the works.

Chris Lago will be doing a stock / MJE-K47 modified MXL V69 comparison in a week and a half. I've got an invitation to send an MJE-K47 mod'd mic to Bill Pearson in LA for a U 87 comparison. And I've got a client with an early 60's Neumann K 47 capsule who will loan it to me for comparison against my own MJE-K47 in a couple of my test platform mics. I did a couple of CAD GXL3000 mods with the MJE-K47 for a client in Italy who's very happy but haven't gotten any audio back yet.

So there will be quite a bit of audio demonstrating the MJE-K47 capsule soon.

Yes, but I'm not selling the MJE-K47 as a DIY part - I'm only building them into mics as one component of systemic approach to mic engineering. This approach starts with a single layer headbasket and includes a best quality capsule-to-FET coupling capacitor, individually selected and biased FET that offers far lower capacitive loading of the capsule than the typical 2SK170 FET, non polarized interstage coupling caps and lower noise bipolar transistors.

Well in that case, will you be offering upgrade packages for people to send in their mics to get done (like my c1)? I sense you may be quite busy if you do...

Yes, the MJE-K47 Modification Suite is intended for any bright, K67-type capsule mic like the C1 that an owner wants to re-voice from a rising HF response to a classic "47" timbre-balance. An actual (un-smoothed) MJE-K47 capsule anechoic response chart is shown below (left) and the manufacturer's smoothed response chart of the revised C1 is below (right).

I seem to recall the original C1 had a boost of 12 dB at 12 kHz but I can't find any documentation to aid my memory. Does anyone have a frequency response chart of an original C1?

Michael,

Will your new capsule head (MJE-K47) fit on the B1 body? If so are you offering it as a mod? Also Do you recommend the electronics upgrade to go along with your MJE Head for any nady cm90's?

Thanks Michael for all of your contributions!

Will you be at AES??

Mick

Hey Mick, thanks for the encouraging words!

Do you mean will my MJE-K47 capsule swap into a Studio Projects B1 or Behringer B1 LDC mic? If so, the answer is yes. But my complete capsule head assembly is not compatible with the BLUE B1 capsule head for their Bottle mics. But is there a 22 mm SDC mic called the B1 I should be aware of?

Yes, the Nady CM-90 is a good candidate for electronic upgrades if it is going to be used with the MJE-K47.

re: AES - I won't be there this time around as I have an international business trip planned around that time.

Some MJE-K47 equipped mics (Apex 460 and CAD GXL 3000) faired quite well in William "Dr. Bill" Pearson's latest "Madness Shootout".Lots of audio samples there.
