Cabinet for rack mounting

They're called cabinets aren't they? Or rack spaces? The box in which you slot all of your rack mountable equipment in?

I'm in the UK, and I've searched all the usual suspects - DV247, Dolphin Audio, even Google Shopping. I can't seem to find any nice looking cabinets to put my stuff.

I've just recently run out of space on my desk and I spotted that 3 bit of gear will go in a rack - I also have a DAC1 which is 1/2 rack size (anyone had any experience with these, mine didn't come with the other 1/2 space plate, but I know they do mount)

I'm finally earning my stripes! So much gear, I need to mount it. So, where can I buy a nice looking rack space?! Am I even using the right terminology, or am I looking like a newbie! fuuck

Studio Rack Adjustable Angeled, 19''/ 8U Rack on eBay, also, Racks Cases, Pro Audio Equipment, Musical Instruments (end time 18-Jun-09 10:24:42 BST)

That's not a cabinet but there are plenty of cheap alternatives on ebay.

Its been posted on here before:
IKEA has a bedside stand called "RAST" for like 15 bucks. Its a perfect fit for rack gear. Order the rails from somewhere and build it yourself. All told it probably wont cost more than 30 bucks.

All fantastic !!! Much appreciated suggestions.

BUT, the Ikea option is pure gold.

I love making things, my studio really does have a lovely project feel to it because a lot of things I made myself including all the sound traps. It won't be 100% mine, but the price is right and it the wood looks better than a hunk of black.

I can buy that IKEA jobbie tomorrow, no problem!
What rails do I need though?

My DAC1 needs a $75 rack conversion kit. :(
Extortion for a half rack piece of metal.

Any cheap rack rails will work, just measure the amount of vertical space you have in the IKEA box and divide by 1.75" (44.45 mm). This will tell you how many spaces you can fit. Judging by the pic, you might get 6 slots in that box, but make sure you measure. Then just order rack rails like this:

Parts-Express.com:*Penn-Elcom R0828/06 Rack Rail Pair 6U | rails rail racks rack rails rack rail rack PAC PA ir air ac Penn083108

Get some wood screws to screw them into the box, and some 10-32 machine screws for your rack screws. I like using the little plastic washers too, keeps your gear from getting rack rash.

You could just build the whole cabinet yourself, if you're good with tools. When I have a more than 4 foot wide console at some point in the (hopefully not too distant) future, I'm just going to build an all in one console 'table' with about 10u of tilted back rackspaces on either side, and perhaps a couple of cabinet 'extension units'.

If you're not, I can't suggest much. The RASK bedside table is a very good idea. I also have this table/cabinet thing that my mixer is on that has a space that is exactly 19 1/4" wide, I plan to stick rails to that one day.
