Post the best song you've ever mixed/recorded...

Inspired by the "Post your first recording" thread. I put this in the low end section because frankly, it's more impressive to hear some really fantastic mixes done with out much.

Post your best mix/recording to date and a few short details, perhaps with an estimated $ worth of gear. Please don't just post the most recent you've worked on, unless it happens to be your personal best/favorite.

Here's (IMO) the best recording I've done:

Off our recent album The Science of Sound v.2.1 (Unmastered)

Wutevayawant- (the first song that plays)
Truth and the Music on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

Free File Hosting Made Simple - MediaFire

done with >5k in gear, including Powerbook G4. AKG Perception 100, PTLE.

*EDIT* Some of this stuff sounds amazing, make sure to state mastered or unmastered

The vocals sound great but you have some serious timing issues with the beat.

Don't know if they're the best ones I've done, but I'm pretty proud of how the ones on my MySpace came out: Jo Ellis (Producer) on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Videos

I chose to put them on there to show the variety of work that I do as producer/engineer. There are a couple more that I've done recently that I'm gonna be putting on there - even some Hip Hop. I'm constantly striving for better, which is why I'm always heavily critical on my own work, so these might just go in favor of others fairly soon.

I especially like the songs "Sister" (by my own band - Jo Ellis Band) and "Winterson" (a song in Afrikaans by a band I'm actually recording again this weekend).

"Cage Cut Eyes" was mostly tracked live with vocal and guitar-double overdubs.

"Days Are Dark" is just a nice acoustic tune to contrast the rest on there. I "heard" an accordion on it and ran up to my grandmother's house to borrow hers and figured out how it works and recorded it.

All these songs were done in the studio as it is advertised on the MySpace, apart from "Standing In The Rain With A Mic In My Hand", which was done with mostly SM57's and SM58's.

Cool

This is a new one... Does that count? LOL.

Set-up is pretty simple:
Mac Book Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo OS 10.5.7 4GB/Ram
Mbox, PTLE 8, MPTK, DVTK2, Digi, BombFactory, McDSP, RNDigital, Waves, etc. Plug-Ins, Motu828, Reason, Logic, Digital Performer, etc... 2-External Firewire Drives, USB hub for mouse and iLoks... Altec-Lansing Multi-Media speakers w/sub, Furman PL-8, Various Guitars, Boss & Dunlop Pedals...

Airlift

This is a little chillin' track that was created using sounds from the Air Users Blog. (Except for the reverse cymbals that come from my own secret stash of really cool guy samples. LOL).

I wanted to see how much I could get away with using one instance each of Digidesign's Structure and Transfuser, in Pro Tools of course. PT8 actually.

Within Structure, I used these 8 patches from the Air Users Blog:

Virus Piano Pad-The main riffage.

Urban Dance Kit-The kick and snare that run through the song.

Orchestral Percussion-For a couple of transitionary cymbal rolls.

Akai MPC60 Hi Hats-The hi-hats that accompany the kick and snare from the Urban Dance Kit.

It's A Sin Strings-These play a kind of counter accent to the main riffage from the Virus Piano Pad.

Scritti FM Piano-Plays a descending melody line near the end of the track, mixed a bit back.

Triton Marcato + Chamber Strings-This is actually two Air User Blog Patches that I layered into one patch.

Cymbals-I used these instead of the one's from my secret stash as I wanted to stay as only Air Users Blog sounds as I could.

In Transfuser these sample sets and loops:

AIR_Loop_36-This is the main loop, although 4 variations were used based on the original loop. I changed up some of the slices of kicks and such to better follow the changes and movements within the main riffage from the Virus Piano Pad.

Hybrid Filter Arp 3-I used only the first bar of this loop, with a variation for the ending notes. I played the pitch of the loop, as in what starting note, by assigning it it's own MIDI channel as in the AIR_Loop_36. I used Filter and Delay as inserts in Transfuser to further process the sound.

Def Drums-Loaded some samples from Nexus Drum Singles to create a drum kit with a bit of percussion at the end of the track, an additional snare in the middle, a doom kick thru-out and a snare fill and door slam towards the end of the track.

Hybrid Bass Arp Seq-I loaded this as a Phrase Sequencer as opposed to a REX Loop/Slice Sequencer as I wanted to use the first note of the loop to MIDI sequence a steady bass line. I used Tape Delay, Filter and Lo-Fi as inserts in Transfuser to further process the sound.

Airlift was mixed and mastered using Digi EQIII, Maxim, DDL, TL Space, BombFactory BF-2A, EQP-1A, Fairchild 660, and T-Racks EQ.

Thanks.

PS: PELicanWord, your tunes at MySpace aren't playing. Just cycling thru for a second, no audio.

Thanks! it's a slightly different drum pattern than usual, what with the tripple kick on the 1 and 3, and the rolling highhats, but that's not a timing issue... that's swing baby!

I guess it's like telling a scremo band singer his vocals are distorted... that's just how it's supposed to sound

This song was recorded with an AT2020 USB mic and some $20 headphones on garageband.

Cost for music equipment ~ $170

I know there are a bunch of problems with levels and timing, but I decided I'd just let it go until I get better equipment and can record it again with higher quality.

Hit the soundclick link in my sig, but that one's only a 192kps file. Actually, the ezFolk link oughta take you to it. I don't know why you were asked for an account.

Went right to the player for me. ???

I should specify. I've got less than 7K worth of gear in my room. Hand me down Yamaha monitors, Sony ES receiver, Infinity 12" sub, Powerbook G4, AKG Perception 100, MBox and PTLE, Reason 4, Recycle, Waves Renaissance, PSP Vintage warmer, Akai MPD32, X-Station 25, Stanton ST8-80 and mixer, Berringer Eurorack MBX1002, Electrix Repeater, Kaysound MIDI keyboard.

Used on that song is the Powerbook, PTLE and MBox, AKG, MPD32, Reason, Recycle, Waves, Vintage Warmer, reciever and monitors... in a bedroom with acoustic foam.

I was being a bit generous on the gear cost, most are hand-me-downs

This is probly my favorite mix I have done.

It is the climax of the 2nd album in a trilogy about a group of time traveling scientists who arrive in the future just in time for an alien invasion of Earth.

Studio gear-wise, pretty minimal setup:

2 Nady RSM-3 mics
Some crappy CAD dynamics
Line 6 Flextone II
Korg Bass Amp emu
Hercules 16/12
3ish gHz Computer I built up for cheap
Nuendo 2
Waves Plugins

4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download 03 The Mighty Quinn.mp3

This started during a break in a show... and ended up turning into a rowdy, free-for-all jam session.

One lone soul started banging out Bob Dylan's "The Mighty Quinn," and gradually all the players wandered back onstage to join in.

There's something so... unexpected about it, so touching and so musical about it... it's like it encapsulates exactly what bands playing in bars are really all about.

Wow, thanks for the compliments. There are so many heavyweights here I was a bit nervous to post it.

I have a Gretsch Catalina Rock kit (14/16/18/26), and I use a Ludwig Black Galaxy Acrolite 6.5 x 14 snare. Aquarian Dejohnette heads on the drums. Zildjian 14" K hats, 22" K Contantinople Medium Low Ride, 18" Paiste Traditional Thin crash, and probly my bargain basement Wuhan 16" crash ($20 about 10 years ago). The drums are part of why I like that recording; they sound a little better than usual for some reason.

The band is Big Slick.
The song is "Feel what you do" I like this one best and it was 5 years ago when my studio was still young.

The songs on this Big Slick myspace page were all off the same CD recorded at my studio Makin' Tracks Recording Studio

Listen to it here.
