Thread Starter | drums overhead and acoustic What do you guys think of shure sm81s for drum overheads and acoustic guitar? I've seen the ATM450s recommended a lot but I need them by Friday and Guitar Center doesn't carry them. Any other recommendations? I want to try to keep it below 700 for a pair. |

| Shure Sm81's are a good choice. They sound great on overheads. I actually have never heard with my own ears them on acoustic but many people have said they are good. |

I am not using them currently for OH or acoustic but I was listening to some old recordings I used them on recently and I will use them again in the near future. | |

Thread Starter | How do they compare to Rode NT5s? Also I have a singer/songwriter booked that wants a djembe in one of her songs. Any tips on micing it up? |

| Lives for gear | I don't know how they compare with the NT1's, but I've used SM81's for years. They sound great...hard to match them at that price level. They work great on drum OH's or acoustic guitar...I've used them in both places many, many times. Frank

| Lives for gear | SM-81s are great on overheads. They aren't as hyped in the high end as some SDCs that are typically used on overheads and acoustic guitars. Maybe that's something you want, but I prefer a mic that is slightly too dark to one that is slightly too bright. I think its easier to get a little air in the top end than it is to take away the harshness. I actually just used one the other day on a guitar cab and it sounded great too. |

| Rode NT-4. Great overhead mic, one of my favorites on acoustic guitar. Let me know if you want some sound clips because I use it a lot. |

| you could try the AA CM414's or the CM47fets. they are cool. i would grab a LDC over a SDC. You will be able to use them on more sources. |
